Tutorial Sheet Four PSK, QAM Modulation With Corrections

Q1. For BPSK modulation in AWGN channel the transmitted signal is given by:

{ √ 2
√ Eb To
cos ( 2 π 1000 t ) for 0 bit
x (t )=
−√ Eb
√ 2
To
cos ( 2 π 1000 t ) for 1 bit

where T ois the symbol pulse width, Eb the bit energy of 10−12 W. The number of cycles
of the transmitted signal in the symbol are 2. The data bits transmitted are 1 0 0 1.

a) Sketch the transmitted waveform for x (t) for the four bits of transmission
indicated above.
b) Determine the data rate. If the available channel bandwidth is 25 kHz, is it
sufficient to transmit the data above.
−10
c) Determine the probability of error is the AWGN has a PSD N o =10 W/Hz.

Q2. There is a minimum Pe requirement for BPSK transmission through an AWGN channel
of 8.5399 ×10−6. Determine the following:

a. Bit Signal-to Noise ratio (SNR).

−10
b. Bit energy if the AWGN has a PSD of N o =10 W/Hz.
c. Carrier amplitude if the bit duration is 1 µs.

Q3. For QPSK modulation the transmitted signal waveform is given by:

x (t )=a1 P1 ( t )+ a2 P 2 ( t )

where P1 (t)=
√ 2
To
cos ( 2 π f c t ) and P2 (t)=
2
To √
sin ( 2 π f c t ), T ois the symbol pulse
width, Eb the bit energy and f c the frequency of the signal.

a) For quadrature modulation it is essential that P1 (t) and P2 (t) form an ortho
normal basis in signal space. State the condition for this and show that it holds
for P1 (t) and P2 (t) .

b) If the mapping of the information bits for both a 1 and a 2 is {−AA : 0:1bit
bit
then
sketch the in-phase and quadrature phase signals for the QPSK modulator if
number of cycles of the transmitted signal in the symbol are 2 and f c =2000 Hz
for the data bits transmitted as 10 00 11. Eb the bit energy of 10−12 W where
A=√ E b.
Consider the bits before the serial-to-parallel conversion operation.

c) Derive the expression for the transmitted x (t) if the data transmitted is 01.
Q4. QPSK modulation is employed in an AWGN channel with noise PSD of transmission
−10
through an AWGN channel of N o =10 W/Hz. Assuming a symbol duration of 1 µs.
Determine the following:

a. Pe when the carrier amplitude is 1.5 m V.

b. Bit duration.

Q5. For 16-QAM modulation the transmitted signal waveform is given by:

x (t )=a1 P1 ( t )+ a2 P 2 ( t )

where P1 (t)=
√ 2
To
cos ( 2 π f c t ) and P2 (t)=
2
To √
sin ( 2 π f c t ), T ois the symbol pulse width,
Eb the bit energy and f c the frequency of the signal.

a) If the mapping of the information bits for both a 1 and a 2 is:

{
3 A :11
A :1 0
−A :01
−3 :00
then sketch the in-phase and quadrature phase signals for the QAM modulator if
number of cycles of the transmitted signal in the symbol are 2 and f c =2000 Hz
for the data bits transmitted as 10 00 . Eb the bit energy of 10−12 W where A=√ E b
. Consider the bits after the serial to parallel conversion operation.

b) Is the mapping in a) as optimum? Draw the 16-QAM constellation using an

optimum mapping. What is the mapping known as?
Correction: original part b) deleted

Q6. Consider binary amplitude shift keying (BASK) transmission of two digital symbols, zero
and one are represented by pulses of a sinusoidal carrier frequency f c, with two
different amplitudes A0 =0 and A1=100 mV. The received signal r (t ) is demodulated
with a correlator demodulator as shown below. The noise in the channel assumed is as
AWGN with an RMS value of 140 mV. Determine the probability of error. Assume the
symbol duration as 10 ms and the signal bandwidth as 10 kHz.
