Breathing Rate and Exercise

The document outlines an experiment aimed at investigating how breathing rate changes with exercise, detailing the apparatus, procedure, results, and discussion points. It includes steps for measuring breaths before and after exercise, along with a requirement to plot the results on a graph. The discussion section prompts analysis of aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the relationship between breathing rate and exercise, and considerations for improving the experiment.

TITLE : Breathing Rate and Exercise

DATE : Tuesday 12th March 2024

AIM : To investigate how breathing rate changes with exercise.

APPARATUS :

Stop Watch

PROCEDURE :

1) The subject was made to sit and relax.

2) The number of breaths per minute taken by the subject was counted by simple
observation. This number was recorded in a table. One inhalation and one exhalation
were counted as one breath.
3) This was repeated for a second time and recorded and the average was calculated.
4) The subject was then instructed to exercise vigorously for 2 minutes by doing a
one-minute jog, 20 jumping jacks, 10 pushups and 10 squats.
5) Immediately after exercise, the number of breaths per minute was counted every minute
until the number of breaths returned to the average breathing rate at rest.
6) These results were recorded in the table as well.
7) A graph of the number of breaths per minute against time was plotted.

RESULTS :

Table 1. Results showing number of breaths before and after exercise

Title of graph : Graph of Number of breaths/minute vs Time

Y-axis = Number of breaths/minute

X-axis = Time

Ensure you put the following:

● Title
● Scale
● Labeled axes with units
● Take up most of the graph page
● Label the different parts of the curve
● Curve must be a smooth decline

DISCUSSION :

1. Define what is aerobic respiration and give the word and chemical equation for it.
2. State where respiration occurs in the cells.
3. Define anaerobic respiration and explain how it is different from aerobic respiration.
4. Describe why breathing rate increased with exercise using the term lactic acid.
5. Describe the trends seen in the graph and explain the results.
6. Explain why the breathing rate decreased with time after exercise using the term oxygen
debt.
7. How can this experiment be used as an indicator of fitness?
8. From the graph indicate and explain:
i) when lactic acid levels would have been the highest.
ii) when oxygen debt was being repaid.
9. State 2 precautions taken.
10. State 2 sources of error.
11. State 2 limitations.

REFLECTION :

How can this experiment have been improved? State any relevance this experiment would have
for you and/or society at large.

CONCLUSION :

State any conclusions and relate them to the aim. This must be only 2 -3 lines
