A public thank you – I’ve been making my living online now for over
a decade and during this time, have been blessed by the following
individuals:
• Bill Vick, Wallace Harkness, Dr. Ilyse O’Desky, Terry Zappulla,
Ed Horch, Mary Ellen Ferrara, Tony Blake, and bunches more.
• I’m also deeply grateful to the blogosphere and the super
folks from whom I learned including Liz Strauss, Mark
Davidson, Suzie Cheel, Joanna Young, Brian Clark, Darren
Rowse, Maureen Sharib, Jim Stroud, Judi Sohn, Catherine
Lawson, Maki, Wendy Piersall, John Chow, Gab Goldenberg,
James Chartrand, Skellie, Crow, Joel Falconer, Melinda, Lorelle
, Brad Shorr, Barbara Swafford, Ulla Hennig , Peter Shallard,
John, and many more as well.
• And I would most remiss indeed if I neglected to mention
Bonnie and the RocketMoms of Squidoo! They taught me an
incredible amount about how terrific Squidoo is for anyone
online.
Next, I am indebted to:

But I digress. :)
NO HYPE or FLUFF!
Right?
'course right! And that's why I'll be giving you excellent resources to
research more ideas online, as well as taking you by the hand and
walking you through the real secrets for great affiliate marketing
success.
Oh yes, I did! Let's continue then – the ideas found here are ALSO
fall under the LiM category.
Less Is More!
But.
But.
But until that time, let's walk before we destroy ourselves by trying
out for the NYC Marathon when we're a toddler who just learned
how to NOT become one with the wall, okay?
Okay?
Well then, with that out of the way, let me now dive earlobe deep
and tell you what affiliate marketing REALLY is.
It's the way those bigname gurus get rich rich rich while
you....DON'T!
Well, okay, that's a bit harsh, I'll admit. But seriously, let me ask you
a question.
Hmmmm?
I'll tell you why – it's because they're all affiliates of the product
launch creator!
And when they send email to you about how nifty the products are,
and when you buy it....the marketer gets the affiliate commission.
And guess what – it's something you'll be able to do to! (once you
HAVE a list, which is a whole 'nother topic, which I'll share with you
later on)!
• You're on a list.
• The list owner sends out a marketing promo that includes the
list owner's affiliate link.
The list owner has, well, as list (which is why she is called a list
owner instead of, say, a mixed martial arts fighter).
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS (besides the fact I just typed in
caps lock)?
That's something the gurus hardly ever touch on, you know. You
can be part of the sweetest affiliate marketing program since Luke
Skywalker blew up the Death Star (or Lando, take your pick) but if
NOBODY knows about your links...nobody CLICKS on your links.
And if nobody clicks on your links, you have ZERO ability to earn
affiliate commissions.
So...the one thing to really take away from all of this is the
following:
• A HUGE LIST
or
I've had personal success with the second, mind you, so I know just
how mind-blowingly crazy it is to see $1,000 days due to
Let's instead now tackle affiliate marketing from the very very very
VERY beginning. And yes, even if you're a seasoned marketer
online....please do NOT skip this next section, because I think you'll
find it most useful indeed. Onwards!
But you'll soon see it's one of the best things you can
do....because you're going to use this Notepad file to track
all of your affiliate links.
Now, of course, you could use Excel or Google Docs or some other
spreadsheet but I'm a simple woman and I like nice simple things!
1.) Product name (it always helps to remember just what you're
promoting!)
That's it!
Sure, you can get all complicated and fancy if you'd like...but
remember, keeping things simple is truly a Wondrous Thing!
Always keep this file open on your desktop! Every time you decide
you want to promote something via affiliate marketing, you copy
the information to this file...AND (stay with me here, this is
important), if by chance the opportunity arises for you to name-
drop your affiliate link in a blog post or a forum or what have you,
you'll have the info right at your fingertips.
Btw, did you notice anything really bizarre about all of my links?
They sure don't look like Clickbank links or E-junkie or Commission
Junction, right?
ie,
http://www.domain.com/[email protected]
http://www.domain.com/product/reseller.php
ie,
http://www.weeklyexpertsales.com/community/reseller.php
Clickbank
Tried and true, it's one of the earliest places where folks who create
ebooks or infoproducts can market their goods.
Let's say you have an insane desire to promote fitness goodies, and
decide upon Turbulence Training.
http://lingstar.turbulence.hop.clickbank.net
As you can tell, basic RAP or Clickbank links are very easy to
remember. That's not so with every affiliate program.....
E-Junkie
https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?
ii=806510&c=ib&aff=23900&cl=132479
There are other sites too, like Share A Sale, Affiliate Fuel and the like
for the mom and pop and IM vendors.
http://www.cj.com
http://www.linkshare.com
http://www.maxbounty.com
The same process for all intensive purposes holds here as well – you
sign up for free as an affiliate, choose the program you want to
promote, and are given targeted links that will tell the provider that
YOU are the one who delivered the sale.
Btw, ever wonder just how that happens? It's pretty easy actually –
your affiliate link will place a cookie on the recipient's computer that
tags YOU as the affiliate. Should the potential customer buy, your
ID gets registered.
clicks-cookies/
• http://affiliatebrand.com/Posts/What-is-an-Affiliate-Cookie-
Life-and-is-Amazons-Too-Short.aspx
• http://www.qualityunit.com/blog/blog-
post/2010/03/19/how-to-define-cookie-life-time/
Some cookies last only 24 hours (Amazon) while others last 60 days
(Clickbank), while others last....some other length. :)
So...where are we now? Let me check. Okay, you know about how
to create a text file to list all of your affiliate links, and you know
where to go to grab said affiliate links.
Let me now ask you the following. Let's say that you have an insane
desire to market Expert Groundwork. You visit the signup page and
get your link – perhaps it's something like
http://www.barbaraling.com/resource-EG/?
[email protected]
A savvy marketer on your list sees the link and realizes, he can
substitute HIS paypal email address instead of YOURS.
This can also happen with naked clickbank links – you could
promote
http://YourID.vendor.hop.clickbank.net
http://TheirCBID.vendor.hop.clickbank.net
Again, your potential commissions get hijacked and you end up one
very unhappy earlobe indeed.
http://097f9av7ml-9tsf11lqau0h6ad.hop.clickbank.net/
http://www.barbaraling.com/learnmore/reimage.php
Go ahead, click on both links. You'll see they go to the same place.
The benefits here are that unless one is REALLY skilled and can
watch the status bar to see just what gets called when, one can't
immediately tell that the link is a Clickbank link or a RAP link or
something else that's easily stealable!
http://www.tinyurl.com
can be viewed as cloaked links too. Here's that previous affiliate link
shortened via TinyURL:
http://tinyurl.com/25gtj8f
Neat, eh? And remember...you'll be able to cloak your links for free,
no matter if you're using Wordpress or a straight site or even want
to run a TinyURL service yourself.
• Personal space
• Public space

Domain names can now be had for quite a bargain (generally less
than $10). Hosting can run you anywhere from FREE to, well, not
free ($20 on up per month).
will give you free hosting if you buy your domain thru them (I
currently have a karate site hosted there).

You can also build a sub-domain off of a popular site for free, like:

Personal Space
Let's assume you have a domain. Create a subdirectory in the root
and give it a compelling name (I use 'learnmore' for mine – other
popular ideas are:
• recommends
• explore
• go
• dashoffto
In that directory, you're going to build a php file that cloak your
affiliate link.
It will require only 4 lines! A typical cloaked link file (also called a
redirect link) looks like:
<?php
$URL="http://lingstar.farmville.hop.clickbank.net/ ";
header ("Location: $URL");
?>
That's it! The bolded line is where your affiliate link would go.
<?php
$URL="http://lingstar.farmville.hop.clickbank.net/ ";
header ("Location: $URL");
?>
That's it!
And don't put any blank lines before the first php call, either.
Other ways of cloaking your links on your own site can be found at:

And get this – you can host your OWN URL shortening service for
free too!
http://sourceforge.net/search/?q=shorten+url
shows you all the packages available for free. You'd have to install
them on your site, however.
Public Space
You want to cloak links on your blogs? There are several plugins
that can do this:
• http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/link-cloaking-plugin/

• http://is.gd/
• http://ow.ly/
as well.
So! It's time to rest and regroup and grab another mug of your
favorite hot beverage and ponder upon …. where are we now?
You've learned about where you can promote your affiliate links –
your personal space, some public space...and how to cloak them no
less!
And it's REALLY difficult to promote to your list unless you, well,
actually HAVE a list!
And I don't blame you one teeny tiny itsy bitsy squigem widgem bit.
That's it.
That's all.
It can encompass:
• http://www.webmarketcentral.com/effective_email_newslet

back-as-an-email-community.htm
• http://www.aweber.com/blog/email-marketing/6-common-
email-marketing-mistakes.htm
Once you become a really savvy marketer, you can host your own
autoresponder like Followup Autoresponder Pro (that's what I use).
But if you're not a geek, I can definitely recommend aWeber or
Getresponse or MailChimp - here's a review I wrote about 2 years
ago.
http://www.barbaraling.com/insights/review-aweber-
autoresponder-going-on-8-years-now/
So, take it from me. To REALLY compel the big huge bucks for
affiliate marketing, you NEED (need need need, need like Godzilla
needs Tokyo, need like Rocky needs Philadelphia, need like your
body needs oxygen to survive) an autoresponder.
And please, for the love of whatever saint you favor, do NOT
go with free autoresponder services!
They're FREE because they append their own ads to your messages.
And you do NOT want that.

Now that you have a way to collect names and email address
(Do you realize you now know how to build your list? Isn't
that nifty?)
It's time to give people a reason to actually OPTIN. One way is to:
Well, let's see. Here's what I always do when I need to get some

as your own. Some of them include:

To actually build that luscious list of yours, you now have to start
getting people visiting and opting in!!
Okay, it's really not. The moment for which you've been waiting,
I'm sure, is promoting your affiliate links all over the universe and
watching the torrents of cash roll in. I enjoy that myself.
No WAIT!
I'll be revealing HOW shortly, but one thing you also need to
do is indulge in major social networking as well. If you can
get your niche to tweet about your posts or talk about your
contributions/etc., you'll enjoy a far higher influx of traffic
than if you were just relying upon your own actions by
themselves. Refer to Income Fitness for a complete hand-
holding on how best to do that.

I personally think it's one of the most superb resources out there for
ebook writing.
Ever sit down one morning after enjoying 23 cups of coffee and say
to yourself:
It IS a fact that your sidebar can either help you make money
online…or simply wrap itself like a decayed sodden iron ball and
chain around your hopeful future income.
• Newsletter
• RSS feed
• Free ebook
If so, make certain to carve out a spot on your sidebar for that.
If so, not only can you include links to specific products, but you can
also use Amazon.com or eBay.com to add precisely targeted
products as a final afterthought.
And hey! Do you have any OTHER favorite blogs? You can
incorporate an RSS feed to those sites to showcase your other
writings, your Twitter stream, your favorite stumbles etc.
What about your favorite links? You can create several link
categories like so:
• Favs – (here you’d put in your favorite blogs that you visit)
Now, you might be asking…why would you add links to your favorite
blogs if you do not make any money off of them?
• Stumbleupon
Hey! And I almost forgot – Blog Advertising (ie, those cute little
125×125 squares you can put on your site and then charge people
for the privilege of advertising there!)
Once you’ve decided just what you want to add in your sidebar,
move to:
Once you boldly have made the decision that YES I SHALL PREVAIL!
and are ready to start tweakizing….
For example, perhaps your main goal with your blog is to build your
list.
In that case, you’d highlight prominently all the ways people can
Stumble or Digg or what have you…your post like BarbaraLing.com
sidebar:
Once you finally have sketched out in your mind just HOW you want
your sidebar to look….it’s time to:
• Newsletter
• RSS feed
• Free ebook
• Network with me
• Other writings
• Popular posts
• Affiliate Programs
• Favorite Links
• Networked Sites
• Advertising
to name a few.
There are tons of useful widgets out there that will do what you
desire such as:
• WidgetBox
and then check them off one by one once you’ve incorporated them
into your site.
Some notes!
If you’d prefer to use tools for some of the tasks above, definitely
check out Big Sellin Optins (that makes it easy to add your
autoresponder/newsletter signup/etc. to your sidebar). And if
you’re looking for an easy way to incorporate adsense/affiliate
marketing, use the theme on which many affiliate sites run –
FlexSqueeze (it’s really quite brilliantly done).
But now.....
Well?
Hmmmm?
Once you’re assured that visitors simply cannot miss learning about
the magnificent benefits you offer them, you can move into
monetizing other components of your sidebar. And again…your
mileage may definitely vary here!
The next section you might want to consider for making money with
your blog sidebar is:
Your most popular/recent posts can really be useful for that task.
I firmly believe that what goes around, comes around. Have you
seen NIcky510 yet and signed up for their Daily Dose? If not, you
really should – the humor is fantastic and the photography is
effortlessly tremendous.
But we’re not done yet!! By the time you reach this area of your
sidebar….you can pretty much go bananas if you’d like. For
example, because I enjoy making money no matter what, I chose
next to:
The last nifty thingee I’d like to highlight for monetizing your
sidebar is something I have not seen anyone else except myself do.
You’re on Twitter, right? Well, if you follow me, you’ll notice that
every now and then, I’ll tweet about something I find most useful
indeed….I call it a Gem Alert.
Nice, eh? You can do the same thing (but please…use a different
hashtag, it will make you stand out much more) too.
YOU have to decide what are the most important aspects of your
sidebar TO YOU….and then make it so. You can always change
things around if the results don’t benefit you the way you deserve.
Thus, it’s time now for action on your part. Open a notepad file,
copy and paste down my 10 steps…and then ask yourself…what do I
need to change to make my sidebar bring me in more
money/publicity/networking/etc.?
Whew!
Where was I?
So...one way to drive traffic to your blog and beef up your list

Now, these posts are just like your free reports. They simply state a
solution that fixes a killer problem that is plaguing your readers.

Ain't it grand?
You have your blog and site and know what to write to help build
your list and also promote your affiliate links. Yay!
So let's begin.
Yay!
Double yay!
Triple yay!
Signature
Your signature! 'tis a magnificent thing....especially as you can add
affiliate links to it!!
Consider, oh, say, Amazon. Let's say that you wanted to promote
P90x (a fitness infomercial thingee).
So you sign up at Amazon and get your affiliate link (in my case it
would be http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?

Looks much better, right? I'm simply using the php file redirect that

Article writing
Article writing is (get this!) writing articles.

Now, the way you profit via articles is that you include a
direct link to your affiliate link in the resource box, OR a
direct link to your optin, or....well, really, that's the two
main thingees you can do.

Video marketing
Now don't make that face at me either!
But....for affiliate marketing, you can create a great video that closes
with the call to action for either your affiliate link (basic) or to your
optin form on your website (better).
• Don't be too long! Videos longer than 4-5 minutes get, alas,
boring (unless you're MacGyver, of course). Keep it short and
sweet as much as possible.
• Don't ask for the sale there. Ask for the optin instead! Close
your video with a cliffhanger and direct the viewer to a page
where they have to opt in to get the final solution.
Video Assassin

Podcasting
Another useful way to get your affiliate links out there is to make
podcasts about the products in general.
A great question! You close off your podcast just like you do your
videos...with a teaser/cliff-hanger that directs folks to an optin page
on your site.

And you know about promoting affiliate links via product reviews.

Next, let's talk about your Thank You Pages. You use those when
someone signs up for your ezine or your free report or what have
you. Consider:
Now, do NOT put in blatant ads that scream, GIVE ME YOUR MONEY

Effective...it's NOT.
Well them, blogs. What other issues do blog owners have? They
might:
You can write a paragraph or two that makes the transition from

Want another example? Let's go with the tried and true fitness
niche and say that you've offered a free report on how to do 100
pushups in under 1 week. You could then follow up with:
That takes care of thankyou pages! Now, let's say that you have
your own products as well. What's on your download page? Have
you considered:
• Aff link 1
• Aff link 2
• Aff link 3
(make sure to set the target to a blank page so the customer does
NOT leave your page when clicking on the links! That's
accomplished by adding a “target=_blank”).
Then start a NEW text box that offers resource for a different
application of ABC.
Finally, if you run your own affiliate program, close with a direct link
for the customer to sign up.
I've seen some fantastic download pages like the above...it can truly
make a difference in your bottom line profits.
Neat, eh?
Next, you've heard of RSS, right? You probably offer an RSS feed to
your blog, right? Well then, what about:
http://www.mobile-phone-school.com/cell/very-bestest-email-
phones-for-62910/
This is a page from my mobile phone site that I've stopped updating.
ON YOUR PHONE???
If so, check out what are currently the bestselling email
phones around!
And what follows are the top ten best selling email phones from
Amazon.com for that date....updated with MY affiliate links.
And I created the page via one VERY simple cut and paste.
Step 2.) Pick your niched product and search for it on Amazon.
Let's say that you want to sell kitchen gadgets, like coffee machines.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias
%3Daps&field-keywords=coffee+maker&x=0&y=0
Look to the left. You'll see the main categories. They fall under
Kitchen and Electronics (among others).
http://www.browsenodes.com
and search:
http://www.browsenodes.com/index.php?
page=Results2&search=coffee+maker&x=0&y=0
Home / Stores / Home & Garden / Kitchen & Dining Features / Brands /
Haier / Home Appliances / Coffee Makers (2344820011)
• bestsellers
• most-wished-for
• most-gifted
• new-releases
http://www.amazon.com/rss/bestsellers/
Then add a slash and then the main category (in our case, it's
“kitchen”).
“tag=YourAmazonID”
In my case, my ID is virtualcoach-20.
Click on the links below and see what they show....and make sure to
hover over the products. You'll see my affiliate ID embedded in the
links at the very end.
http://www.amazon.com/rss/bestsellers/kitchen/289744?
tag=virtualcoach-20
http://www.amazon.com/rss/most-wished-for/kitchen/289744?
tag=virtualcoach-20
http://www.amazon.com/rss/most-gifted/kitchen/289744?
tag=virtualcoach-20
This is key! This is where you're going to get the code to make a
post regarding these products...with your affiliate ID.
Then view the source from your browser. Copy and paste
that to a temporary notepad file.
Step 7.) Start a new post on your blog and write intro copy.
Once you've written that, switch from Visual to HTML (raw) mode.
Copy and paste in all of the Amazon source you had saved to the
notepad file.
Then preview your post and be amazed. Done right, it should look
like:
• Apparel
• Automotive
• Baby
• Beauty
• Blended
• Books
• Classical
• DigitalMusic
• DVD
• Electronics
• ForeignBooks
• GourmetFood
• HealthPersonalCare

• Bestselling Trumpets
You see how you can get RSS feeds for your affiliate links. Amazon
offers them as does eBay and other places.
Here's how!
Ain't it purty-like?
Wheee!
And those are some nifty ideas for advanced affiliate marketing.
And Facebook.
And LinkedIn.
Why not make money from them too via affiliate marketing?
Now, keep in mind, you can never really be blatant about it (and
some folks complain if you do so. Some views can be found at

marketing on social networks.
I use Social Oomph to bulk upload this file, and then tweet once

You can do bunches more with Social Oomph but that's a topic for
another book in the future. :)
Then go to Amazon.com!
Then click on
Ain't it nifty?
Now then....QUICK!
Obviously, you'd want to change the text a wee bit....but that's one
nifty way to send pre-created affiliate links to Twitter.
Remember how I mentioned that you can use Social Oomph to auto
tweet from other blogs?
The way it does that is very simple; you have to add in the
RSS feed of the blog in question.
RSS FEED
RSS FEEEEEED!
Like....dare I remind you of it....the RSS Amazon Affiliate Feed you
used to targeted product posts on your blog!

tag=virtualcoach-20
and use THAT as a blog feed for autoposting every couple of days.
Of course, you'd change virtualcoach-20 to your Amazon associate
ID.
Those are some cool Twitter affiliate marketing ideas. Let's now
turn to:
