out for the NYC Marathon when we're a toddler who just learned
how to NOT become one with the wall, okay?

In other words, I could pound you over the head with

everything my 13+ years of affiliate marketing has taught me.

But that's just plain dumb. It would be information overload, it

would probably go in one ear and out the other...it would not give
you what you deserve.

You deserve ideas you can put into action IMMEDIATELY.

and tell you what affiliate marketing REALLY is.

It's the way those bigname gurus get rich rich rich while
you....DON'T!

Well, okay, that's a bit harsh, I'll admit. But seriously, let me ask you
a question.

Ever wonder why bleeploads of marketers will pounce onto

a product launch with all the excitement of Lassie pulling
Timmy out a pitch-black well that was populated by rabid
scorpions who were about to send Timmy to a long long
sleep?

Hmmmm?

I'll tell you why – it's because they're all affiliates of the product
launch creator!

And when they send email to you about how nifty the products are,
and when you buy it....the marketer gets the affiliate commission.

That's one aspect of affiliate marketing – it's called promoting to

your list.

And guess what – it's something you'll be able to do to! (once you
HAVE a list, which is a whole 'nother topic, which I'll share with you
later on)!

The key point to take out here -

• You're on a list.

• The list owner sends out a marketing promo that includes the
list owner's affiliate link.

• You buy the product.

• The list owner gets the affiliate commission.

Again, it's called Promoting To Your List. It's very effective; I do it

myself once or twice a week.

But that raises another interesting topic!

The list owner has, well, as list (which is why she is called a list
owner instead of, say, a mixed martial arts fighter).

That means she has a way of reaching dozens or hundreds or

thousands or millions or people.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS (besides the fact I just typed in
caps lock)?

It means that she can compel (proactively compel) traffic to click on

her link.

Because you know...

Without traffic, you'll make ZERO with affiliate marketing.

Let me repeat that.

Without traffic, you'll make ZERO with affiliate marketing.

That's something the gurus hardly ever touch on, you know. You
can be part of the sweetest affiliate marketing program since Luke
Skywalker blew up the Death Star (or Lando, take your pick) but if
NOBODY knows about your links...nobody CLICKS on your links.

And if nobody clicks on your links, you have ZERO ability to earn
affiliate commissions.

Got that internalized?

So...the one thing to really take away from all of this is the
following:

To really make a killing with affiliate marketing, you need EITHER:

• A HUGE LIST

or

• BEEYONS of clicks from targeted traffic

I've had personal success with the second, mind you, so I know just
how mind-blowingly crazy it is to see $1,000 days due to

And to be honest with you...THAT'S your goal if you want to become

a super-affiliate.

You want to become a trusted resource...the kind of person from

whom others will buy if you recommend something.

Now....that topic by itself is worthy of an entire book (and if you

Let's instead now tackle affiliate marketing from the very very very
VERY beginning. And yes, even if you're a seasoned marketer
online....please do NOT skip this next section, because I think you'll

ADVENTURE 2 – PREPPING FOR FUTURE SUCCESS

There are two ways to go about affiliate marketing.

The smart way...and the really cluelessly idjut way.

The clueless way is to sign up willy nilly at all sorts of affiliate

network and then fling up links wherever the sun doesn't shine.
After the first few dozen, you start to forget just what affiliate links
you DO have....and end up seeing virtually zilch profits or benefits
from all of your activity.

Obviously, this is a Very Icky Thing Indeed!

So instead of being more dippy than a 43 scoop ice cream cone,

we're going to approach affiliate marketing the SMART way. And
here's the steps:

Step 1.) Create a Notepad File

Step 2.) Sign up at Popular Affiliate Marketing Networks

Step 3.) Learn to Cloak Your Links.

STEP 1.) CREATE A TEXT FILE

Admit it! You were NOT expecting THIS to be the very first
instruction, right?

But you'll soon see it's one of the best things you can
do....because you're going to use this Notepad file to track
all of your affiliate links.

Now, of course, you could use Excel or Google Docs or some other
spreadsheet but I'm a simple woman and I like nice simple things!

Go to your computer desktop, and create a directory called

AffiliateMarketing.

Do that yet? Great!

Next, create a blank notepad text file. Name it something

memorable, link “affiliatelinks.txt”. (Sure, you could name it
“wildebeestnose.txt”, but that probably wouldn't stay in your mind
for the future).

In this file, you're going to track the following.

1.) Product name (it always helps to remember just what you're
promoting!)

2.) Your affiliate link (ie, something like

That's it!

Sure, you can get all complicated and fancy if you'd like...but
remember, keeping things simple is truly a Wondrous Thing!

Always keep this file open on your desktop! Every time you decide
you want to promote something via affiliate marketing, you copy
the information to this file...AND (stay with me here, this is
important), if by chance the opportunity arises for you to name-

drop your affiliate link in a blog post or a forum or what have you,
you'll have the info right at your fingertips.

my soon-to-be-revealed secret.

Ancient Chinese Secret: To promote affiliate links, you Need More
Calgon (and no, I'm not dating myself, whyever would you ask that?)
need to have the blasted links to begin with!

RAP Bank – Like Clickbank, only it

promotes products that use Rapid
Action Profits (instant commissions
for your affiliates! 'Tis a magnificent thing). This means when when
you promote products that are 100% affiliate commission, you get
paid IMMEDIATELY. Straight RAP-type links look generally like

That's my free membership site, btw. Ever wonder how affiliates

make money off of free membership sites? For the affiliate
marketing the opportunity, generally the free membership will have
a premium upgrade (resulting in commission); for the product
owner, the more people who sign up for anything free, the bigger
their list gets and the more opportunity that anything sent to said
list will result in a sale.

Tried and true, it's one of the earliest places where folks who create
ebooks or infoproducts can market their goods.

Here's how affiliate links here look – you request an ID (mine is

lingstar) and then zoom over to their marketplace to find products
to promote.

Let's say you have an insane desire to promote fitness goodies, and
decide upon Turbulence Training.

Their Vendor ID is 'turbulence', my affiliate ID is 'lingstar', so MY

particular affiliate link for this would be

One little-known neat thing about Clickbank is that vendors can

offer multiple products. Turbulence Training offers well over 40
products their affiliates can promote, accessible at this link:

As you can tell, basic RAP or Clickbank links are very easy to
remember. That's not so with every affiliate program.....

E-Junkie

Another place that let's people

market their goodies. Affiliates sign
up and then select the vendor whom
they want to promote.

The links look a wee bit bizarre – here's an example of one.

This is is popular with lots of non-IM peoples too such as bloggers

too.

There are other sites too, like Share A Sale, Affiliate Fuel and the like
for the mom and pop and IM vendors.

Professional brands (ie, Edmunds, Staples, PetSmart, etc, will use

The same process for all intensive purposes holds here as well – you
sign up for free as an affiliate, choose the program you want to
promote, and are given targeted links that will tell the provider that
YOU are the one who delivered the sale.

Btw, ever wonder just how that happens? It's pretty easy actually –
your affiliate link will place a cookie on the recipient's computer that
tags YOU as the affiliate. Should the potential customer buy, your
ID gets registered.

Some cookies last only 24 hours (Amazon) while others last 60 days
(Clickbank), while others last....some other length. :)

So...where are we now? Let me check. Okay, you know about how
to create a text file to list all of your affiliate links, and you know
where to go to grab said affiliate links.

Let me now ask you the following. Let's say that you have an insane
desire to market Expert Groundwork. You visit the signup page and
get your link – perhaps it's something like

Now, imagine that you promote your link to your list.

A savvy marketer on your list sees the link and realizes, he can
substitute HIS paypal email address instead of YOURS.

NOT GOOD! That means your affiliate commission effectively just

got stolen. WAH!

This can also happen with naked clickbank links – you could
promote

and have someone change THAT to

Again, your potential commissions get hijacked and you end up one
very unhappy earlobe indeed.

And that's why you want to:

STEP 3.) LEARN TO CLOAK YOUR LINKS.

The solution is rather simple indeed!

Instead of displaying your naked affiliate link like

The benefits here are that unless one is REALLY skilled and can
watch the status bar to see just what gets called when, one can't
immediately tell that the link is a Clickbank link or a RAP link or
something else that's easily stealable!

Cloaking your links will be covered in more detail in the next

adventure, but let me first show you that you're probably already
aware of cloaked links – shortened links like those from

can be viewed as cloaked links too. Here's that previous affiliate link
shortened via TinyURL:

Neat, eh? And remember...you'll be able to cloak your links for free,
no matter if you're using Wordpress or a straight site or even want

than $10). Hosting can run you anywhere from FREE to, well, not

affiliate link.

sudden, the screen darkens and you behold a cute little rectangle
that offers you something/anything if only you'd submit your name
and email.

Ever wonder what gets done with those names?

It's simple! They get stored on an autoresponder service.

What's an autoresponder service, I hear you ask?

It's generally a web-based service like aWeber or Getresponse or

MailChimp that lets people handle the whole send-email-to-
multiple-people thingee.

Not clear enough? Let me explain.

People can send out email to their in one of two ways:

1. Broadcast – This is used when you want to send something

out in real time, right now or in the future. It's used to send
out newsletter updates, new affiliate promotions and the like.

2. Followup – This is used when sending out a sequence (read:

more than one) series of emails in a timed fashion. In this
case, the email messages are written and stored in a
particular order. The autoresponder user then specifies at
what time each message gets sent. It's useful for followup

marketing or customer care service – when people buy my

products, for example, I'll email said goodies to them, and
then the next day, send a followup email (receive everything
okay?) and then 3 days later, send another email that gives
away a great tip, and then 7 days later, send another email
that …. see what I mean?

That's called followup marketing. You can also use it to

compel people to buy (it's been said that a customer needs to
be exposed to you/your product at least 7 times before he or
she pulls out their credit card), to send out pre-written ezines,
to offer 365 tips, etc.etc.etc.

As a fast track power affiliate marketer, what you'll be doing is

using it to develop your relationship with your list. And that topic
in of and by itself – it's a whole 'nother expanse we could send years

And no, I do NOT mean the stupid little square advertising buttons
that are worthless unless you have beeyons of peoples visiting your
site.

Instead, ask yourself:

Ever sit down one morning after enjoying 23 cups of coffee and say
to yourself:

"Jeepers Self, I wonder if my blog’s sidebar is proactively Being All It

Can Be and helping beef up my bottom line, compared to sending
visitors screaming frantically in search of white out for their
computer screen?"

Yep, me neither. However!

It IS a fact that your sidebar can either help you make money
online…or simply wrap itself like a decayed sodden iron ball and
chain around your hopeful future income.

And here’s how.

1.) Take stock of how many ways you have to

make money via your blog.
How ARE you making money from your site? You don’t have to
make money today, you know…simply building your list or gaining
subscribers goes leagues towards increasing FUTURE profits down
the road.

Do you have an optin:

• Newsletter

• RSS feed

• Free ebook

• Free 7 Day eClass

If so, make certain to carve out a spot on your sidebar for that.

What about affiliate programs? Do you have favorite affiliate

programs that you market?

If so, not only can you include links to specific products, but you can
also use Amazon.com or eBay.com to add precisely targeted
products as a final afterthought.

What about Adsense/PPC/etc.? Now, I personally don’t really use

Adsense myself anymore (eBay is far more profitable for me) but
hey, your mileage may vary. Make sure to incorporate that as well.

And hey! Do you have any OTHER favorite blogs? You can
incorporate an RSS feed to those sites to showcase your other
writings, your Twitter stream, your favorite stumbles etc.

What about your favorite links? You can create several link
categories like so:

Now, you might be asking…why would you add links to your favorite
blogs if you do not make any money off of them?

Simple!! For one thing, it’s good manners to highlight the

sites you follow and appreciate…and for another, you can
create some rather nifty blog exchanges with others in your
niche.

This has the fantastic benefit of gently increasing visibility to both

parties (you and the people to whom you link). That ensures more
and more people find your blog online.

Co-operation and sharing online – it works wonders!

And wow, speaking of sharing…you probably have a presence in

social networks, right?

• Twitter

• Facebook

• LinkedIn

• Stumbleupon

Your sidebar is a prime location to easily give people a quick and

easy method for networking up with you.

Hey! And I almost forgot – Blog Advertising (ie, those cute little
125×125 squares you can put on your site and then charge people
for the privilege of advertising there!)

Once you’ve decided just what you want to add in your sidebar,

2.) Open a notepad and jot down EVERYTHING you

Yes, I know….keeping track of things is so non-computer-like. But
trust me…it’s sooo easy to let critical items slip between the cracks
when updating your sidebar.

Once you boldly have made the decision that YES I SHALL PREVAIL!
and are ready to start tweakizing….

3.) Ask yourself….HOW should I order them?

The most valuable real estate on your website is the top.
Thus, you should have the most important business-relevant
(ie, monetizing, networking, customer generation,
etc.etc.etc.) resources right where your visitors simply
CANNOT miss them.

For example, perhaps your main goal with your blog is to build your
list.

You should blazingly offer your autoresponder optin as one of the

most prominent features of your sidebar like so:

Or perhaps…you want to allow people to spread the word about

your posts instead.

really not that difficult to do at all – my book, 21 Days to a More
Profitable Blog goes into that), you can easily look at your
sidebar.php code and add all the necessary tweakies. Remember,
you might want to include your:

check out Big Sellin Optins (that makes it easy to add your
autoresponder/newsletter signup/etc. to your sidebar). And if
you’re looking for an easy way to incorporate adsense/affiliate
marketing, use the theme on which many affiliate sites run –
FlexSqueeze (it’s really quite brilliantly done).

But now.....

An opportunity now presents itself with as much grace and

style as a frozen coffee cup flung through a cherished
stained glass window!

How on EARTH can you prioritize what you want to add

where??????

Luckily, this is NOT as soul-searingly agonizing as you might think.

After all, contrary to my 7 year old son’s belief, the world will NOT
come to an end if you take the time to play and make things right.
Tomorrow always comes (except on the eve of nuclear disaster) so
you can always tweak your sidebar, see how your visitors react, get
input from your friends, revisit the whole concept, etc.etc.etc.

So! With that as an introduction, let’s explore some rather bold

ways of organizing your blog sidebar so you make MORE affiliate
money instead of less.

5.) Ask yourself…what’s the most important aspect

of your blog?
Let me sit with a wise expression on my face, lean back (first
ensuring the kids returned the back leg of my chair), steeple my
hands and intone in a beautifully musical one-note murmur the
following blinding spear of wisdom.

"What’s most important to YOU in the long run"?

Well?

• Is it getting your name out there in front of other social

networkers?

• Is it showcasing advertisers on your blog?

• Is it highlighting your own products?

• Is it showing off your portfolio?

Hmmmm?

Everyone’s priorities are different! Thus, what works for me Aunt

Bertha or my Uncle Dexter might be completely at ends with your
chosen monetary goals.

And that’s okay! For example, my main priority on many of my sites

is building my list.

And because my priority is building me list, I have chosen my

autoresponder to be the FIRST thing you see in my sidebar like so:

Always put your priority in the prime spot of your sidebar. Of

course, your priority might be quite different – you might sell
advertising space on your blog, so you want that show up first.

6.) Who the heck are YOU?

I realized this after reading the extremely useful help for the Flex
Theme that’s active on my site. Sure, I have my "About Barbara
Ling" on the top of my site….but my site was Virtual Coach! So I
chose next to add a small blurb of "About Virtual Coach" as the next
entry to my sidebar – if folks haven’t yet subscribed to my list,
they’ll immediate see the "About Virtual Coach" as they scan down
the page. This helps build confidence in my readers that I’m worth
exploring more:

Once you’re assured that visitors simply cannot miss learning about
the magnificent benefits you offer them, you can move into
monetizing other components of your sidebar. And again…your
mileage may definitely vary here!

For me, I said to myself:

7.) Making Money is a Long Term Adventure!

And because it is, I want to ensure that as many people as possible
know about me and my writings. They might not buy from me
today, but there’s always tomorrow!

8.) Strengthen Your Authority With Popular and/or

Recent Posts
Yes, I know…I have to add the Popularity plugin. Bad Barbara! But
one thing that’s definitely useful on a blog is having links to your
most popular writings so visitors can see where your gems really lie.

I really need to update Recent Posts to Popular Posts. Mental note

to self – add the Wordpress Popluar Posts plugin! (update to self –
okay, I just saved the plugin myself – will install it after I finish this
post (or after I wake up the kids for breakfast or feed the husband or
feed the mooses or…)).

explore your site further.

Your most popular/recent posts can really be useful for that task.

The next section I implemented falls under the category of Help

Others. Do you have a favorite blog or a blogging partner or simply
want to help someone out? If so, you can:

9.) Give Free Publicity to a Deserving Quality Blog

I REALLY adore the cartoon Nicky 510. So I decided the next block of
my sidebar to listing the most recent posts from that site:

I firmly believe that what goes around, comes around. Have you

really should – the humor is fantastic and the photography is
effortlessly tremendous.

Let’s see, what next? Here’s a perfect example of why writing

tutorials is so superb – I just realized I have some things out of order
myself! But they might be important to you….you can:

10.) Showcase Top

Commentors/Comments/Authors/etc.
If you really like giving your blog comment authors sidebar space,
you can highlight your blog community, their comments, the top
commentors, etc.etc.etc. That would give people more motivation
to comment more at your blog (it gives them backlinks and gives
you more activity). Note to self! Get Top Commentors Plugin!

What else should your blog sidebar possess? Well….how ’bout:

11.) Add Your Blog Navigation

Once folks are at your site, being able to see the categories or
archives or what have you can be most useful indeed!

sidebar….you can pretty much go bananas if you’d like. For
example, because I enjoy making money no matter what, I chose

12.) Add Affiliate Goodies!

I myself adore the eBay affiliate program….so I make certain to add
some goodies that would appeal to readers on me blog. And
because Mobile phones are sooo popular, I chose to focus on:

Any time someone registers at eBay or wins a bid/etc., I get a

commission. And that’s only a DelightFul Thing indeed!

Another useful trick for monetizing your sidebar is to:

13.) Revolutionize Your Blogroll

Think your blogroll is only for your friends? Think again!

You can also add your affiliate links as favorite resources as

well as the blogs you admire.

Half my Blogroll is one…half is the other.

The last nifty thingee I’d like to highlight for monetizing your
sidebar is something I have not seen anyone else except myself do.

You’re on Twitter, right? Well, if you follow me, you’ll notice that
every now and then, I’ll tweet about something I find most useful
indeed….I call it a Gem Alert.

There’s a method to me madness! And that leads me to

14.) Add Your MOST Valuable Tweets

Sure, I could simply list all my tweets on my sidebar, but some of
them are pretty mundane. I want visitors to SEE what I consider

valuable….so I tag those with "gemalert" and read them into my

hashtag, it will make you stand out much more) too.

YOU have to decide what are the most important aspects of your
sidebar TO YOU….and then make it so. You can always change
things around if the results don’t benefit you the way you deserve.

Thus, it’s time now for action on your part. Open a notepad file,
copy and paste down my 10 steps…and then ask yourself…what do I
need to change to make my sidebar bring me in more
money/publicity/networking/etc.?

Everyone and their earlobes want fast answers to their questions,
preferably yesterday.

So...one way to drive traffic to your blog and beef up your list
signups is to write great How-Tos!

Now, these posts are just like your free reports. They simply state a
solution that fixes a killer problem that is plaguing your readers.

And of course, in your article...you'll include your affiliate links as a

final destination.

subscriber base.

• Don't be too long! Videos longer than 4-5 minutes get, alas,
boring (unless you're MacGyver, of course). Keep it short and
sweet as much as possible.

• Don't ask for the sale there. Ask for the optin instead! Close
your video with a cliffhanger and direct the viewer to a page
where they have to opt in to get the final solution.

• Don't stick JUST with YouTube! There are bleeploads of

For example, let's say that you want to market eHarmony.com in

Florida. You could buy a domain, say, FLLoveConnections.com,
point it in the direction of your affiliate link, and then create a tear-
off sheet that promotes your site.

Have you heard of Download Guard? It's a tremendous software
package used to protect software downloads. Many Clickbank
vendors use it; it's known as Dlguard.

You can write a paragraph or two that makes the transition from
what was just requested to, As a blog owner, you want to become a

all of the reviews....I myself have tried it (I really did, btw – it's
great!) and found it does exactly what it says it does.

Of course, you'd want to include a product picture as well.

That takes care of thankyou pages! Now, let's say that you have
your own products as well. What's on your download page? Have

get the hang of it, it takes less than 5 minute to create,
because the Amazon RSS interface gives you all of the
html/source code necessary (including images!) that you
need.

And that reminds me of something else!

You see how you can get RSS feeds for your affiliate links. Amazon
offers them as does eBay and other places.

Well then, why not add them to your sidebar?

I don't know about you, but for me...time is money. So yes, I do
indeed take advantage of auto-tweeting by the following profitable
method.

Step 1.) I signed up for the premium account at Social Oomph.

Yes, I actually spend money every month. :) When you're as active

in as many niches as I am, it's just good business sense.

What the Social Oomph account does for me is it lets me

automatically tweet blog posts from smart blogs (so I'm posting
even if I'm asleep, thus building up my expert reputation). In
addition, it lets me bulk upload tweets to be promoted online
during a specific time frame.

Step 2.) I created a text file of 100 or so affiliate marketing links.
