Electromagnetism exam 18.12.2024 AITS23P
Please answer all questions and include the intermediate steps (when applicable). Write your name
on each paper. You can get 30 points total in the exam. 10 points is needed to pass the course.
1. In a lightning strike, charges (mainly electrons) flow between the thundercloud and the earth's
surface at an estimated speed of 25,000 C/s. The duration of the flash is about 120 µs.
a) How much charge flows between the cloud and the ground during a lightning strike, and
b) how many protons does this charge correspond to?
𝜇𝜇0 𝐼𝐼
c) The magnetic field strength due to current in a straight conductor is given by 𝐵𝐵 = .
2𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋
Assuming this applies to the lightning strike, what is the magnetic field strength at a distance of
𝑟𝑟 = 123 m?
(6 points)
2. The charges q1 = 3.12 nC and q2 = -2.06 nC are positioned as shown. What -
total electric field (magnitude and direction) do they create at point P,
located on the y-axis 1.0 m from the origin? (6 points)
3. In a RC circuit (see the figure), a 0.50 MΩ resistor and a 4.7 µF capacitor are connected in series
with a 25 V voltage source.
a) Calculate the time constant of the circuit.
b) Calculate the maximum energy of the capacitor after closing the switch.
c) What is the electric charge 10 s after closing the switch?
(6 points)
4. In the circuit on the right, resistance R1 = 40 Ω, resistance R2 = 30 Ω,
voltage V1 = 12 V and voltage V2 = 8 V. Determine the currents through
R1, R2 and V2.
(6 points)
5. In a mass spectrometer, a positively charged particle first passes through
a velocity selector (region with E and B1), and then enters a magnetic
field (B2), where the path of the particle follows a semicircular trajectory
(figure).
a) What are the directions of the magnetic fields B1 and B2? (make a
simple sketch on the answer paper, explain in writing if necessary)
b) If the target speed of the velocity selector is 10 km/s and the electric
field of the velocity selector is 22 kV/m, what should the value of the
magnetic field B1 be?
(6 points)
