D. Discussing New Concepts This afternoon we will discuss the
and Practicing New Skills. short-story “Dead Stars” by Paz
Marquez Benitez. Before we discuss the
short story let us discuss first who Paz
Marquez Benitez is.
Paz Marquez Benitez is one of the
well-known author in the Philippines.
She is a short-story writer, an educator
and an editor. She taught at the
University’s English department from
1916-1951 and acquired as an
outstanding teacher. One of her famous
work is the short story “Dead Stars.”
Last time I told you to read in advance
the short story. Now, Stephannie can
you summarize the short story “Dead
Stars” by Paz Marquez Benitez.
The story is all about, Alfredo
Salazar, a young lawyer who is
engaged to Esperanza, a woman
with traditional values. Their long
engagement has left Alfredo
feeling unsure and restless. This
feeling grows stronger when he
meets Julia Salas, the lively sister
of his brother-in-law's wife.
Alfredo starts to fall for Julia,
creating a conflict within him as he
struggles with his emotions and the
expectations of society and his
family. Despite his deepening
feelings for Julia, Alfredo
ultimately decides to stay true to
his engagement with Esperanza,
choosing duty over desire. Julia
leaves town, and Alfredo marries
Esperanza, living a conventional
life. Years later, Alfredo meets
Julia again during a business trip
and realizes that the intense
emotions he once felt for her have
faded. He understands that his
feelings for Julia were like dead
stars, which appear bright but are
actually long gone.
Very good, Stephannie.
The story revolves around the character
of Alfredo Salazar, a man that is set to
be married with Esperanza, a woman he
has been courting for four years.
However, Alfredo finds himself drawn
to another woman named Julia Salas,
whom he meets at a dinner party.
Despite being engaged with Esperanza,
Julia and Alfredo develop a deep
emotional connection which leads for
Alfredo to question his feelings for both
Esperanza and Julia.
Now, do you think Alfredo really love
Esperanza?
Yes, Teresa.
I think he do love Esperanza
because he won’t court her for four
years if he’s not in love with her.
Yes, you have a point with that.
Then why do you think Alfredo became
attracted to Julia if he really loved
Esperanza?
Yes, Esmael?
I think he was drawn to Julia’s
personality, charm, or some other
quality that he found lacking in his
relationship with Esperanza.
Alright, I get your point.
You are trying to say that Julia Salas
fulfill the things that Esperanza could
not give to Alfredo but do you think
Alfredo’s feelings towards Julia Salas is
really love?
Yes, Keneth.
I think Alfredo’s feeling towards
Julia Salas is just an infatuation
because after seeing Julia Salas
after his marriage to Esperanza he
did not feel any spark or emotion
towards her.
Yes that is correct.
Maybe Alfredo is really not in love with
Julia Salas. Infatuation and love is hard
to differentiate and sometimes we
thought that infatuation and love are
just the same.
Do you have an idea how infatuation
differ from love?
Yes, Carl.
Love is a deep and lasting
emotional bond characterized by
care, respect, and commitment,
while infatuation is a temporary
and intense attraction based on
idealized perceptions and
excitement.
That is correct.
Love and infatuation are often
confusing, but they are distinct
emotional experiences. Love is a deep
and enduring emotional connection that
involves care, respect, trust, and
commitment. It is based on a genuine
understanding and acceptance of the
other person, and it often grows
stronger over time. Love involves a
willingness to support and prioritize the
well-being of the other person, even in
difficult times. On the other hand,
infatuation is a strong but short-lived
attraction or obsession with someone.
So it is more likely that Alfredo’s
emotions towards Julia is just an
infatuation.
When do you think the story happen?
Yes, Rob. The story is set during the early
1900s in the Philippines during the
time when the country was under
American colonial rule.
Exactly!
The story was first published in 1925
and it was during the ruling of the
Americans.
How does the setting influence the
actions of the characters in the story?
Yes, Ashley.
The setting of the “Dead Stars”
influences the characters actions
by reflecting the changing cultural
influences during the colonial
period. The American presence in
the Philippines is shown through
Alfredo’s behavior, as he adopts
American attitudes towards love
and romance.
Exactly.
As you can notice Alfredo’s behavior is
greatly influence by American culture.
His infatuation with Julia can be seen as
a reflection of his desire to break free
from the constraints of traditional
Filipino society and embrace the more
liberal attitudes of the American.
Now, in connection to the story, do you
think Alfredo Salazar deserve the love
of Esperanza despite of being disloyal
with her?
Yes, Kia.
I think he doesn’t deserve the love
of Esperanza because of his
disloyalty towards her. Loyalty
and trust are essential components
of a healthy relationship and
Alfredo’s actions clearly violate
these principles.
You have a point on your answer. I
also agree with that because loyalty is
very important on establishing a strong
and genuine relationship. However,
there are also people who believes in
second chances but you should also
know that second chances is not for all.
This can only be given to someone who
truly deserved it.
Do you have any questions in the story?
None, Ma’am.
Since you don’t have any questions let’s
have your first activity this morning.
E. Discussing New Concepts For your first activity, it is called
and Practicing New Skills #2 “SPOT ME.” You will look for the lines
that use literary devices in the short
story. After that, determine what kind of
literary devices are being used. This
activity will be done by pair. Your
seatmate will be your partner for this
activity.
I will give you five minutes to finish
your activity.
You may start doing your activity now. (The students will start doing their
activity)
Time is up.
Everybody pass your paper in front.
I will call two pairs to present their
work in front.
The first pair is Kia and Ashley. The literary devices that we found
in the story, first is the symbolism
and it is shown in the line “The
stars were beginning to hide
behind the blue skirts of the sky.”
This line uses the symbolism of
stars to represent hidden desires or
unattainable dreams. The next one
is Irony and this shown in the line
“He was not happy; he was even a
little sad.” This line highlights the
irony of Alfredo’s emotional state,
as he is not content despite
seemingly having everything he
desires.
Very good, Kia and Ashley.
Everybody give them a powerful clap.
(The students will give them a
powerful clap”
The next pair is Teresa and Jessabel.
The first literary devices that we
found in the story is
foreshadowing and it can be seen
in the line “He felt a sudden pang
of regret.” This line foreshadows
the eventual regret that Alfredo
will feel as a result of his action.
The next literary devices is
imagery and it can be seen in the
line “The moon was up, painting
the world silver, making things
look just a little more beautiful.”
This line uses vivid imagery to
create a sense of beauty and
nostalgia in the setting.
That is also a very good presentation.
Everybody give them a “Dalagang
Pilipina” clap.
(The teacher will demonstrate the
dalagang Pilipina clap.)
(The student will do the dalagang
Pilipina clap.)
F. Developing Mastery. In this activity, you will sing the song
“Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang” of Ogie
Alcasid with a twist.
Do you know this song class?
No, Ma’am.
This song talks about love that comes
too late and this song is connected to
the situation of Julia Salas and Alfredo
Salazar in the story.
So, in this activity, I will give you a
microphone, and you need to pass it to
the person next to you while singing the
song. When the song stops, you will
also stop singing. The last person
holding the microphone will answer a
question. After he/she answers the
question, you will continue to sing the
song.
Is that clear class? Yes, Ma’am.
Alright, let’s start our activity.
(The teacher will play the song) (The students will start singing the
song.)
(The song stops playing.) (Carla is the last person holding
the microphone)
What is Alfredo’s dilemma throughout
the story? Alfredo’s dilemma throughout the
story revolves around his
conflicting feelings for two
women: Esperanza and Julia.
Alfredo is engaged to Esperanza,
whom he has known for a long
time and is expected to marry.
However, when he meets Julia, he
finds himself drawn for her.
Very good, Carla.
(The song will continue to play.)
(The students will continue to
sing.)
(The song stops playing.) (James is the last person holding
the microphone.)
How does the story reflect the societal
norms and expectations of Filipino
society during the early 20th century?
In the story the characters display a
strong sense of respect for
authority figures and elders, a
cultural norm deeply ingrained in
Filipino society. This is evident in
how they seek the approval and
advice of older family members in
their decisions, reflecting the
hierarchical nature of Filipino
societal structures.
That’s a great answer, James.
(The song continue to play)
(The students will continue to
(The song stops playing.) sing.)
How does the concept of “Dead Stars” (The last students holding the
relate to Filipino cultural beliefs or microphone is Dianne.)
values about love and regret?
Filipino society places a high value
on commitment, particularly in the
context of marriage and family.
Alfredo’s decision to stay with
Esperanza despite his feelings for
Julia reflects the cultural
expectation to honor commitments
and uphold familial duties, even at
the cost of personal happiness.
This mirrors the concept of “Dead
Stars” where one holds onto the
remnants of a once bright
passionate feeling out of respect
That is a very good answer, Dianne. for societal norms and personal
duty.

Who wants to share their letter in the
class?
Yes, Keneth.
Dear Rob,
Hi! I hope you’re doing okay. I’ve
been thinking a lot lately, and I
wanted to write this letter to
explain why I decided to end my
feelings for you.
One big reason is that I realized we
don’t have the same interests. You
love sports and always talked
about games and teams, which is
cool, but I’m more into reading
and drawing. I felt like we didn’t
have much to talk about anymore
because our interests are so
different.
Another reason is that sometimes I
felt like you didn’t really listen to
me. When I tried to talk about
things that were important to me, it
seemed like you weren’t very
interested. It made me feel sad
because I wanted to share my
thoughts and feelings with you.
Lastly, I think I need to focus more
on my schoolwork and hobbies
right now. I want to do well in
school and keep learning new
things. Having a boyfriend can be
distracting, and I need to
concentrate on my goals.
I want you to know that I still think
you’re a great person, and I hope
we can still be friends. Thank you
for all the good times we shared. I
wish you all the best!
Take care,
Keneth
That is a very hear touching letter,
Keneth.
Who else wants to share their letter?
Yes, Teresa.
Dear Mark,
Hi, I hope you’re doing well. I’ve
been thinking about us a lot lately,
and I wanted to write this letter to
you, to explain why I decided to
end my feelings for you.
When we first started hanging out,
I really enjoyed your company.
You always made me laugh, and I
liked spending time with you. But
over time, I started to realize some
things that made me change my
mind.
Another reason is that sometimes I
felt left out. When we were with
your friends, I often felt like I was
just there but not really included in
the conversations. It made me feel
lonely, and I think it’s important
for both people to feel comfortable
and happy in a relationship.
Finally, I think it’s important for
both of us to be happy and feel
good about ourselves. I realized
that I wasn’t as happy as I should
be, and I needed to make a change.
I hope you understand that this
decision is about me trying to take
care of myself.
I am still thankful that you have
been part of my life. You’re a great
person, and I’m grateful for the
good times we had. Thank you for
understanding.
Your ex-lover,
