Lesson2-Learning-Module-Histogram-and-Frequency-Polygon (1)

This lesson focuses on creating graphical representations of frequency distribution tables using Microsoft Excel, specifically histograms and frequency polygons. Students will learn to utilize Excel's tools for data visualization, interpret trends, and customize graphs for effective presentation. The document provides step-by-step instructions for creating these graphs and includes activities for practical application.

Lesson 2 Learning Module:

GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF
FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION TABLE
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. utilize Excel's built-in tools to create a histogram and frequency polygon, adjusting bin
sizes and formatting for clear data visualization;
2. plot frequency polygons using grouped and ungrouped data, and customize graphs for
effective data presentation; and,
3. develop the ability to interpret histograms and frequency polygons in Excel, identifying
trends, patterns, and distributions to make data-driven decisions.

1. Histogram type of graph used to represent the

distribution of a dataset. It displays the frequency of
data points that fall within specific intervals or "bins".
Each bin represents a range of values, and the height of
each bar in the histogram corresponds to the number of
data points (frequency) that fall within that range.
Histogram and Bar Graph
Histograms and bar graphs are both visual representations of data that use bars,
histograms are drawn with no gaps between the bars, representing numerical data, while
bar graphs show rectangular bars with spaces in between with length proportional to the
values they represent.

Steps in Creating Histogram in Microsoft Excel

Step 1: Prepare your data, Microsoft Excel can process both Grouped and Ungrouped data,
In Excel Ribbon Tabs, click Data. Click Data Analysis.

Step 2: Under the Data Analysis, chose Histogram, click okay.

Step 3: Under the Input Range, select all score you want to put in your Histogram. Next click
Bin Range, select all Data under Class Mark. At the bottom of the tab, find Chart Output

then click
Step 4: After the Excel created the Histogram Chart, click the actual graph then go to Chart
Design choose Quick Layout, the click the graph that does not have spaces between as
histogram don’t have spaces.

2. Frequency Polygon is a graphical representation of the distribution of a dataset, similar

to a histogram but using lines instead of bars.
Steps In Creating Frequency Polygon in Microsoft Excel
Step 1: Prepare your data, Microsoft Excel can process both Grouped and Ungrouped data in
creating Microsoft Excel, click the data under Frequency, then under Insert tab, charts choose
Lines and click Simple Line.

Step 2: After the Excel created the graph, click the number under the graph and click select
data. Under the data tab, select edit the choose Class Mark then click okay.

Step 3: The Frequency polygon is now done, rename, adjust, and label the graph.
Activity
Organize the following data in Histogram and Frequency Polygon using Microsoft Excel.
1. 45, 50, 52, 55, 60, 62, 65, 65, 68, 70, 72, 75, 78, 80, 80, 82, 85, 88, 90, 92, 95, 95, 98, 100
2. 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 35, 37, 38, 40, 42, 45, 47, 48, 50, 52, 53, 55, 57, 60, 62, 63, 65, 67, 70
3.
Class Interval Frequency (f)
40-49 2
50-59 4
60-69 5
70-79 6
80-89 4
90-99 3
