Jackie suffers from agoraphobia, the fear of going outside and of crowded places.
“It started a few months ago when I was in a store. I suddenly felt
confused and sick, so I stopped going there. But it happened again in
different places, so I stopped going out. After spending two weeks in the
house, I decided to get help. First, I tried group therapy, but now I follow
a virtual reality treatment. I have a special app to visit the park and
crowded places. I still can’t go into stores, but I can go outside again”. A

Feeding the planet – are living buildings the answer?
There are 7 billion people in the world today, and in 2050 there will probably be 9 billion
or more. This overpopulation is going to create serious problems. How will we produce
enough food for everyone? There isn’t enough land in the world to grow all this food, so
we need to change the way we produce it. One solution is to grow food in cities. Some
architects want to create “living buildings” where people can live and also grow food.
One project for a “living tower” shows a fifteen-floor building with stores at the bottom,
and apartments and offices on the higher floors. On every floor, there will also be a “field”,
which will grow fresh food such as tomatoes and strawberries. Residents will pick their
own food. It won’t be necessary to transport it long distances, so this will save energy.
Architect Jason Goldsmith explains the project. “There will be electronic temperature
control for the plants,” he says. “We’ll recycle water from the apartments and reuse it to water them. By growing plants in
towers, we will need fewer farms in the countryside. This will help reduce pollution on our land and in rivers. I believe that
living buildings will help protect the environment.”
For an extra 2 billion people, we need to grow a lot more food, so we need to consider all the possible solutions.
One option is to change our eating habits. More people are becoming vegetarians or eating organic food to save energy.
Another option is to develop new farming technology. Scientists are creating new plants that can survive droughts or floods.
It is also essential to reduce the amount of food we throw away.
Living buildings will not solve the food problem, but they will probably be one of a number of different solutions.
