Part 2:
Transferable Skills
So, after reading sections 12.2 and 12.3, I’m supposed to talk about skills I’ve mastered and
ones I need to work on. Let me start with the ones I’m good at.
Skills I’ve Mastered:
Communication: I’ve gotten pretty decent at this. Like, last term, my group for the
psychology project was totally stuck because two members kept arguing. I kinda stepped in and
suggested we split tasks based on what everyone liked. We ended up finishing early and got an
A. I guess listening and explaining things calmly helped.
Time Management: Balancing work and school is rough, but I’ve learned to block my
time. I use a planner (old-school, I know) to split my day into work shifts, study hours, and even
Netflix breaks. It’s why I haven’t missed a deadline yet… well, mostly.
Teamwork: I volunteer at a food bank on weekends, and last month we had to organize
a big donation drive. I was in charge of coordinating volunteers. It was chaos at first, but we
figured out who’s good at what—like, Sam’s great at lifting boxes, Maria’s a pro at sorting—and
it all worked out.
Problem-Solving: When my laptop crashed during finals week, I freaked out. But instead
of panicking, I borrowed my sister’s tablet, used the library computers, and saved everything to
Google Drive. Not perfect, but I got my papers done.
Adaptability: My job at the café changed its menu twice in three months. I had to
memorize new recipes and deal with annoyed customers. At first, I hated it, but now I’m kinda
the “go-to” person when things change.
Public Speaking: I get sweaty just thinking about presenting. My plan? Join the student
debate club. I heard they do low-pressure practice sessions. Also, maybe record myself talking
and watch it back—cringe, but helpful.
Technical Skills (like Excel): I avoid spreadsheets like they’re math homework. My friend
recommended a free Coursera course, so I’ll try that. Also, maybe ask my boss to let me handle
inventory data at work for practice.
Leadership: I’m good at following orders, not giving them. To improve, I’ll volunteer to
lead a small group project next term. Baby steps, right?
Networking: I’m shy about reaching out to people. But there’s a career fair next month—
I’ll force myself to talk to at least three recruiters. Also, update my LinkedIn… finally.
Critical Thinking: Sometimes I take info at face value. My poli-sci prof said to always ask
“why” and “how” when researching. I’ll start doing that for essays and see if it helps.
Overall, I’ve got some strengths, but there’s definitely room to grow. Gotta keep pushing myself,
even if it’s uncomfortable.
