Visual Principles

Visuals play a crucial role in instruction by simplifying complex information, providing concrete references, and offering alternative ways for students to comprehend material. Visual literacy involves the ability to interpret and create visual messages, which can be developed through specific input and output strategies. Effective visual design should ensure legibility, enhance engagement, and focus attention on key messages while considering developmental and cultural factors.

VISUAL PRINCIPLES

Role of Visuals in Instruction

 Visuals provide a concrete referent for ideas. Unlike words, visuals

have resemblance to the thing they represent. They say “a picture
is worth a thousand words”
 Visual can simplify information that is difficult to understand –
diagrams, illustrations, flow charts
 Role of Visuals in Instruction
 Finally, visuals provide a redundant channel; when accompanying
spoken or written verbal information they present that information
in different modality, giving students opportunity and a chance to
comprehend visually what they might miss verbally

Visual Literacy
 Visual literacy refers to the learned ability to interpret visual
messages accurately and to create such messages
 Students must be trained to comprehend and form mental images
of the subjects they are exposed to

Input Strategies
 Helping learners decode, or read visual proficiently by practicing visual
analysis skills (e.g.) through picture analysis and discussion of films
and video programs
Output Strategies
 Helping learners to encode, or “write” visuals – to express themselves
and communicate with others (through planning, and producing photo
and video presentations).

 Learners must be guided toward correct decoding of visuals. The skill

of interpreting and creating meaning from the stimuli that surrounds
visuals is another aspect of visual literacy.
 Unless interpreted correctly, a visual may not provide the learning
opportunity as expected

 Developmental effects – how learners decode visuals is affected my

many variables like difference in age: younger children and older
children will look at visuals from different points of view

 Cultural effects – different cultural groups may perceive visual

materials in different ways
 Visual preferences – In selecting visuals, teachers have to make
appropriate choices between the kinds of visual that are preferred and
those that are effective
 Visual literacy can also be realized through student creation of visual
presentation (encoding)
 Consider picture sequencing – especially for younger children

Goals of visual design

Ensure legibility
 Make sure viewers can see the words and images clearly
 Remove as many obstacles as possible that might create an
obstacle to the transmission of the message
 Reduce the effort required to interpret the message
 Increase the viewer’s active engagement with the message
 Make the design of the visual as appealing as possible
 Make style appropriate for audience
 Focus attention on the most important part of the message.
Think of the overall design pattern plus specific directional
guides as a means for achieving the goal of focusing attention
