College Preparation

Grade 11
Name: Shayla Oporta
Worksheet: “What Makes You Stand Out?”
Please read the prompts and respond based on your experience as a high
school student.
 What is one academic achievement you’re proud of? (GPA, a
challenging course, etc.)
I am proud of my GPA because even though I always had a good GPA, I
have improved to a greater one. Besides from that, math can be
challenging sometimes for me but I feel proud that I am capable of
keeping up with it, without lowering my grade.

 What is one extracurricular activity you’ve been involved in?

What leadership roles or accomplishments have you had?
In my previous school, I went to an art club and joined volleyball
classes. Also, I have won 3rd place in science fair but I am hoping to win
1st place this time.
 Have you overcome any personal challenges that could make a
compelling part of your college application?
A personal challenge that I had overcome is that I feel less anxious
when participating in class. I used to be very nervous when coming up
in the front and speak. I hated oral presentations because I stuttered
too much. That affected my grades, since I wasn’t so participative, and
there was always a comment in my progress report that I should
participate more. Now, I am proud that I feel confident when speaking
up to make a comment during class.
 What is something unique about your background or
perspective?
I am person who likes to observe and analyze things. Since I am not much
of a talker, I like to listen to people more. I consider myself an optimistic
person and try to always see the best in things/people. Whenever there is a
problem, I like to find the way to solve it because for me there is always a
solution.
 What are your goals for college and how do they connect to
your interests or experiences?

My goals are to be a top student, maintain an excellent GPA, make new

relationships, be able to solve problems with creative and innovative
ideas, obtain a master’s degree.
These goals connect to my interests because I want my future in
college be the best. I want to excel, improve as a person and in the
way meet people who will make my life enjoyable because I don’t want
my life in college only be about studies. I want to be optimistic and
think that maybe college could be better than high school in some way.
