UNIT 1
MY LAST SUMMER HOLIDAYS
1. Read about this person’s last summer holidays and find out:
Holiday’s destination:
Means of travel:
Accommodation:
Date of arrival (at the destination):
Date of departure:
My vacations last summer were simply great! In short, I enjoyed
every single minute of it. Let me tell you some of the experiences I
had and, you’ll agree!
I travelled with my good friend Leo to Miami. We flew there on
Monday 22 January and went straight to the hotel. We’d just finished
checking in when our friend Sue, who had arrived in Miami three
days earlier, called us to invite us to go snorkelling on one of the
best beaches in Miami. Of course, we accepted. Two hours later we
were watching colourful fish, amazing coral and even a beautiful
starfish.
Two nights later, we were having dinner at a famous restaurant
when we saw Taylor Swift at a nearby table. We couldn’t believe it.
She was very friendly and accepted a photo with us.
On the following three days, the weather was perfect so we enjoyed
the beach and the sea and we bought lots of souvenirs.
I hated it when we had to come back on January 29th. However, it
was great to arrive and tell all my family about our great trip!
2. Number the events in the order they happened
Matt and his friend Leo arrived in Miami’s airport
They saw Taylor Swift at a restaurant
Sue arrived in Miami
They registered at the hotel
They flew back home
They went snorkelling
They told their families about the trip
8
They went shopping

walk around the small centre and have ice cream.

Animals in the City
Read the following article
Recently, there have been many reports in newspapers and on TV about big animals
coming into towns and cities. There have been bears in Vancouver parks, leopards on
the streets of Mumbai and wild pigs in gardens in Berlin. What happens when big
animals come into our cities? Is it a good thing or is it dangerous for us and the
animals?
Wild animals usually come into cities to look for food. In Cape Town, South Africa,
baboons sometimes come into the suburbs. They eat fruit from gardens and go into
people's kitchens and take food from cupboards and fridges! Baboons are strong
animals and sometimes they scare children and fight with pet dogs. Many people do
not like them, but the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Sometimes, baboons are
hurt in car accidents and the sugar in human food can be very bad for their teeth. The
city council in Cape Town has a team of Baboon Monitors. Their job is to find baboons
in the city and take them back to the countryside. This makes the city safer for people
and it is healthier for the baboons. The problem is that a lot of baboons will come back
to the city to find food again.
In Berlin in Germany, groups of wild pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food.
Pigs have come into the city for hundreds of years, but now the winters are warmer,
there are more pigs than in the past. Pigs eat flowers and plants and dig in gardens
and parks in the city. They also walk in the street and cause traffic accidents. Some city
residents like the pigs and give them food. But the city council is worried about the
traffic accidents. They have told people to stop giving the pigs food and have put up
fences to stop the pigs entering the city.
In Moscow in Russia, there are 35,000 wild dogs. They live in parks, empty houses,
markets and train stations. Some of the dogs were pets that people did not want so
they left them on the streets. Others were born on the streets and have always lived
there. Some dogs live alone and others live in packs (a pack is the name for a group of
dogs). In 2010, scientists studied the dogs. They found some very interesting facts:
57
• Packs have leaders. The leaders are the most intelligent dogs and not the
biggest or strongest ones.
• Dogs know that it is safer to cross the street with people and some dogs
understand traffic lights.
• Dogs have learnt that people give more food to small, cute dogs than to big
ones. The cutest dogs in a pack wait on the street for people to give them food.
When they have got some food, they share it with the other dogs in the pack.
• Some dogs have started travelling on the Moscow underground trains.
What do the people in Moscow think of the dogs? A lot of people like them and are
used to seeing them on the streets. They give the dogs food and water to drink. The
winter in Moscow is very cold with lots of snow and temperatures of -10 ºC. It can be
hard for dogs to survive but some city residents have built small huts for the dogs to
live in during the winter.
Mice, squirrels and birds often live in cities and survive. Some bigger animals like the
dogs in Moscow can survive in the city too, with a little help from their human friends.
For many big animals, cities are dangerous places and they need our help to return to
the countryside.

Frightening experiences
The only thing to fear is ...
No one believes her. But
what about the blood in the pool? And the horrible injuries to
her leg? How could something like that have happened?
60
Now, read the rest of the story
No one believed me about what happened in the swimming pool, of course. I don’t
blame them. I wouldn’t believe it if any of them said it either. Maybe I’d pretend to
61
believe it if Raul told the story – but only because I want him to like me, or even just to
know I exist.
I suppose everyone knows I exist now. I saw all the chats on my phone before they
took it away. Jackie and Anya are saying I had my period, but that’s really stupid. There
was far too much blood for that. Obviously – well, it’s obvious if you forget about the
laws of physics and space and time – obviously, there was only one way my blood got
in the water. There was a shark in there with me.
How else did I get these bite marks on my right leg? Like I said, I don’t blame them for
not believing me, but I’m not going in a pool ever again. I never go in the sea anyway,
so that’s not a new decision just because of what happened yesterday. That’s just
sensible.
I heard Mum and Dad telling the doctors they feel responsible because they let me
watch all those old ‘Jaws’ films. But, I’m glad they let me watch and learn because
things could be much worse. It was a good thing it happened in a pool and not the sea
with no other people around to hear me scream. I wouldn’t be lying here now. And Raul
would for a hundred per cent sure never know I exist.
I’ve imagined a shark attack a million times. What it would feel like, what the shark’s
eyes would look like close up. But I wasn’t prepared for how hard the impact is, even
though I’ve seen great whites attack seals on YouTube. It was like being thrown
against a wall. I was swimming on my back when I felt it touch me. When I put my head
up it was swimming right towards me. Its eyes were just like everyone says – dead,
dead, dead inside. And the teeth were like great big kitchen knives.
When the doctors asked me if I ever have nightmares about sharks, I told them the
truth. I’ve had nightmares since I started watching those films, I said. My bedroom
floor turns into water and the shark is there, swimming in circles.
They were impressed by all my knowledge about sharks. They didn’t know most
swimmers get attacked by sharks in water that’s only about two metres deep. To be
fair, most people don’t know that. Just because they’re doctors doesn’t mean they can
be experts at everything. They seemed to think it was pretty important that I was
attacked in about that depth of water because they wrote that down in their notes. I
don’t think that’s important, though, because the pool wasn’t big or deep like the ocean.
Obviously, a shark in a swimming pool has to attack in less than two metres of water.
Anyway, they were also really interested in the pictures on my phone of people after
they were attacked by sharks. It’s a big collection, so I’m not surprised they borrowed
my phone to have more time to look.
I liked showing how much I know, but the whole conversation was kind of stupid
because everyone is missing the point. The point is how did the shark end up in the
pool? They didn’t ask me that. It’s a pity, because I could explain that sharks can swim
in seawater and fresh water. Some sharks swim up rivers. Not many people know that.
They asked me about school instead and if I was having any problems. I mean, I am
now, I said. Or, I will be when I go back to school and everyone’s still talking about me.
You’d think they’d want to know how I made that shark appear out of nowhere. How
did I open the door in the ocean where the shark was swimming so it could swim right
into the pool for lunch? It’s the fear that did it, I’m sure. My teacher says the only thing
to fear is fear itself. I always thought that meant ‘Don’t be afraid, because bad things
62
are never as bad as you expect.’ But now I know the truth. ‘Fear makes bad things
happen.’
