INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH, NUTRITION, AND SAFETY

Instructions: Answer the following questions based on the video Child Development
Workers' and Teachers' Conference: Early Care Matters by Knowledge Channel
https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?ref=watch_permalink&v=885986276368530

I. Understanding the Theme

1. Give three objectives of the conference
ANSWER:
- To equip early childhood educators with knowledge and skills to provide nurturing
care through online training or conference.
- To provide opportunities for early learning that can be used at school or at home.
- To highlight the importance of children's security and safety, as well as the
violations of their rights.

2. Why is early childhood care and education important in holistic child
development?
ANSWER: Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is essential for holistic child
development as it nurtures a child’s cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth
during their most formative years. By providing enriching experiences, fostering social
interactions, and building foundational skills, it equips children with the tools they need
to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally throughout their lives. It also
emphasizes that early childhood care and education are important in the holistic
development of a child because they help them to be better equipped to adapt to the
structured environment of formal schooling. They tend to perform better academically,
as early learning boosts their readiness for subjects like writing and reading that
eventually serve as guides in their future lives.

3. How does the theme "Early Care Matters" align with current trends in early
childhood education?
ANSWER: For my insights, the theme "Early Care Matters" aligns with current trends in
early childhood education by underscoring our responsibility to prioritize children’s
health, nutrition, and safety as foundational aspects of their development. Ensuring

proper health through regular check-ups and hygiene practices, providing balanced
nutrition to support growth and brain development, and maintaining a safe and secure
learning environment are vital tasks that allow children to thrive physically, emotionally,
and cognitively. By embracing research-driven practices, just like the example in the
video conference, which are the Heckman Equation and Nurturing Care Framework,
and promoting equitable access to quality early education, we prepare children for
lifelong learning and well-being, reinforcing the growing recognition that the early years
are the most impactful in a child’s development.

II. The Nurturing Care Framework

III. Best Practices in Early Childhood Development

1. Give two the emerging trends in early childhood care that were highlighted
during the conference?

ANSWER: The two emerging trends are activities with materials and activities without
materials. The first trend discussed is the growing recognition of how toys and books
can stimulate a child’s cognitive and emotional development. Educational materials,
such as toys and books, offer children hands-on learning opportunities that help foster
creativity, problem-solving skills, and language development. Books, for example,
expose children to language patterns and vocabulary, while toys encourage exploration,
fine motor skills, and social interaction. These materials are seen as powerful tools to
support a child’s learning in various domains, laying a strong foundation for academic
success.

The second emerging trend focuses on the value of non-material-based activities that
rely more on human interaction and creativity. Conversations with children, for instance,
promote language development, social skills, and emotional intelligence. Through
dialogues, children are encouraged to think, ask questions, and express their ideas.
Similarly, singing and movement activities engage children in self-expression,
coordination, and understanding of rhythm and sounds. These activities also provide
emotional benefits by fostering positive relationships and a sense of security. The
holistic approach of combining both material and non-material activities helps create a
well-rounded early childhood experience.

2. Give one latest strategy/methodology for effective early childhood care?
ANSWER: One of the latest strategies for effective early childhood care, is the use of
visual schedules and routines. A visual schedule uses pictures, symbols, or drawings to
represent different activities during the day, such as mealtime, nap time, playtime, and
learning sessions. By showing children a clear, step-by-step depiction of their day, they
are able to anticipate transitions and participate more actively in routines. This strategy
is especially beneficial for young children who may struggle with verbal instructions or
experience anxiety when facing unfamiliar situations.

3. Are there any innovative tools or programs discussed during the
conference that could improve early childhood education? Give one and
describe.
ANSWER: One innovative tool discussed during the conference is the use of the
internet to access educational resources. This allows teachers and parents to gather
new ideas and materials for teaching. With the wide availability of online platforms, early
childhood educators can find creative lesson plans, interactive activities, and even
virtual workshops that enhance their teaching strategies. Moreover, parents can also
access resources to support their children's learning at home, making it a collaborative

effort to foster educational development. By utilizing the internet effectively, both

educators and families can stay up-to-date with the latest tools and techniques in early
childhood education.

IV.Challenges and Solutions in Early Childhood Education

1. Give one common challenge faced by teachers and child development
workers in providing quality care?
ANSWER: One of that is identifying and reporting suspected abuse while maintaining
confidentiality and protecting the child from further harm.

2. How can this challenge be addressed through policy or community

support?
ANSWER: To address this, you must calm down and listen carefully to the student.
Assure him/her that you understand his/her feelings and later on explain things further.
Show some support and report the abuse. Other than that, schools and childcare
centers should provide comprehensive training on recognizing abuse signs, establish
clear reporting protocols, and create a safe and supportive environment where children
feel comfortable disclosing concerns.

3. State a support system or training program recommended for child

development workers and teachers?
ANSWER: In the conference, Ms. Levi emphasized the phrase #TayoAngBantayBata,
which talks about child safety. We should remember that child safety is everyone’s
responsibility, meaning that us child workers and teachers have a big part in every
child's security and safety. Let's serve us a bantay bata inside the room and treasure all
students.

V. Monitoring and Evaluating Early Care Programs

1. Describe a tool/method discussed for assessing the effectiveness of early
care programs.

ANSWER: One effective method for assessing early care programs is through arts and
crafts activities, which help evaluate children's creativity, motor skills, and cognitive
development. By observing how children use materials, follow instructions, and express
ideas, educators can gauge their progress in problem-solving, coordination, and
emotional expression. Additionally, reviewing completed projects and engaging children

in discussions about their artwork provides insight into their comprehension,

communication skills, and overall developmental growth.

2. How can educators track and measure developmental milestones in

children?

ANSWER: Based on Dr. Charla Saamong, we can track and measure developmental
milestones in children through a combination of observations, assessments, and the
ECCD checklist. We can implement it in detailed notes on children's actions, language
use, and interactions. During observation, we can ask the parents if the observation is
also aligned with the behavior of the child at home. Monitoring development milestones
is important to identify the child's needs and adjust activities to address them. Learning
opportunities provide evidence of development milestones.

VI.Personal Reflection
1. What key takeaways did you find most impactful?
ANSWER: One of the most impactful takeaways from the conference is the importance
of the attachment between parents and their children, especially in early childhood. A
strong attachment provides a secure foundation for emotional and cognitive
development, fostering trust, confidence, and a sense of safety. When parents are
actively involved in their child's learning and emotional well-being, it strengthens this
bond and supports the child’s growth in all areas. Encouraging positive, nurturing
relationships between parents and children is crucial, as it directly impacts the child’s
ability to engage in learning and develop social and emotional skills.

2. As a teacher, how can you stay updated with advancements in your field?
ANSWER: As a future educator, staying updated with advancements in the field can be
achieved by regularly attending professional development workshops, webinars, and
conferences. Subscribing to educational journals and following thought leaders and
organizations on social media platforms is also helpful. Additionally, collaborating with
peers through online forums or local teacher networks can expose you to innovative
strategies and practices that are gaining traction in early childhood education.

3. What will be your follow-up initiative or action plan to sustain the learnings
from the conference?
ANSWER: To sustain the learnings from the conference, my action plan would be to
implement a blended approach to teaching by integrating more digital tools into the
classroom while ensuring that they complement traditional methods. I would also work
UNIVERSITY OF CALOOCAN CITY
Biglang Awa St., Corner Catleya St., EDSA, Caloocan City

on creating a communication system with parents that allows for regular updates and
the sharing of resources, so they remain engaged in their child's learning process.
Additionally, I plan to stay involved in professional learning communities to continue
gaining fresh insights and strategies that I can apply in my practice.
