Functions Short Notes

1. Definition of a Function:

A function f from a set A to a set B is a rule that assigns each element in A exactly one element in
B . This is denoted as f : A → B .

2. Types of Functions:
One-to-One (Injective): A function f is injective if different elements in the domain map to
different elements in the codomain. For all x1 , x2
∈ A, if f (x1 ) = f (x2 ), then x1 = x2 .

Onto (Surjective): A function f is surjective if every element in the codomain is the image of at
least one element in the domain. For every y ∈ B , there exists x ∈ A such that f (x) = y .
Bijective: A function f is bijective if it is both injective and surjective. Each element of the
domain maps to a unique element in the codomain, and each element of the codomain is
mapped by a unique element of the domain.

3. Composite Functions:
If f : A → B and g : B → C , then the composite function g ∘ f : A → C is defined by (g ∘
f )(x) = g(f (x)).

4. Inverse Functions:
If f : A → B is a bijective function, then its inverse f −1 : B → A is defined by f −1 (y) = x if f (x) =
y.

5. Important Functions:
Identity Function: I(x) = x for all x ∈ A.
Constant Function: f (x) = c, where c is a constant.
Polynomial Function: f (x) = an xn + an−1 xn−1 + ⋯ + a1 x + a0 .

p(x)
Rational Function: f (x) = q(x) , where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials and q(x) =
 0.

Exponential Function: f (x) = ax , where a > 0 and a =

 1.
Logarithmic Function: f (x) = loga (x), where a > 0 and a =

 1.
Trigonometric Functions: sin(x), cos(x), tan(x), etc.
Inverse Trigonometric Functions: sin−1 (x), cos−1 (x), tan−1 (x), etc.

6. Properties of Functions:
Domain and Range: The domain of a function f is the set of all possible input values. The
range of f is the set of all possible output values.
Even and Odd Functions: A function f is even if f (−x) = f (x) for all x in the domain. It is odd if
f (−x) = −f (x) for all x in the domain.

Periodic Functions: A function f is periodic if there exists a positive constant T such that f (x +
T ) = f (x) for all x in the domain.

7. Limits and Continuity:

A function f is continuous at x = c if limx→c f (x) = f (c).
