Lesson Plan

Objectives:
- to learn new vocabulary on the
topic
- to develop pupils’ speaking skills
- to teach pupils how to make their
home safe

PROCEDURE
I. GREETING

T: Good morning , children.


Ss: Good morning, teacher.
T: How are you today?
Ss: I’m fine , thank you . And you?
T: I’m fine thank you. Sit down.
T: Today we are going to talk about crime.(slide #1) It’s not the most exciting thing to talk
about but unfortunately it is an integral part of our life. On TV news, in movies, in detective
stories we can hear, see or read about crime. It may seem very thrilling, breathtaking or exciting

on a TV screen (slide #2) but is it


so attractive in a real life?
Think about this question while
watching a short extract from a film
based on a real crime.
(Students are shown an extract from

T : What type of crime did you see in this movie?. (an Air hijack)
T : How would you feel if you were on that plane? (scared, frightened)
II.WARMING-UP

T: The quatation of the day:

“The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason,
but with no morals”
Martin Luther King
T: Translate it.
How do you understand this quotation? (Criminals are often very intelligent and talented
people but they commit crime because of lack of moral)

III. Reading

T: Now we will learn some new words representing different types of crime. Read them and
repeat after me. (Ss read the words on the board and repeat them after the teacher)

Arson Murder
Burglary Hijacking
Fighting Mugging
Robbery Shoplifting
Kidnapping

T: Now you will see these words with appropriate pictures. Try to guess the meaning of
the words.
(Ss watch a presentation in PowerPoint and repeat the words again looking at
the pictures.They try to guess the meaning of the words )

T (after Ss have finished watching the Presentation): Have you guessed the meaning of the
words? Let us check. Look at the definitions of these words and match them to the words.

(Ss drag the right word to the definition on a board made in a SMART Board Program)
IV. LISTENING
T: Now, we will listen to the news program about one type of crime we have learned.

Pre-listening activity –presentation of new words:


to suspect [sə'spekt] 1) підозрювати (в чомусь - of)
the suspect - ['sʌspekt] підозрюваний
to charge someone with smth - обвинуватити когось у чомусь

Listen attentively for after listening you will have to answer questions.
Before listening read the questions, you have 1 minute for that.

Post-listening activity.

Answer questions:
1. What was the suspect charged with? (Arson)
2. What did the suspect say? (I hate America)
3. What hair style did he have? (a pony tail)
4. What vehicle did he drive? (a minivan with a Canadian license plate)
5. Where was he placed? (under arrest)
6. What nationality was he? (German)
7. What was the reason of his crime? (The deportation of his mother)
8. When did the hearing take place? (A week and a half ago)

V. Writing

T: Now, open your copy-books and we will create a very usefull table . (T asks Ss to
think of the noun/person and noun/action forms which match to the verb form. Teacher
elicit answers from Ss and complete the table. Ss copy the table in their copy-books)

T: write the definition of some words you do not know:


vandal - a person who deliberately destroys or damages public or private property
fraud - wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain
Joyride - a fast and dangerous ride, esp. one taken in a stolen vehicle
Traffic drugs – to bring drugs in the country illegally
Pick sb’s pocket – to steal from other people's pockets
Assassinate – to murder (an important person) in a surprise attack for political or religious
reasons.

VI. Speaking:
Group work. Children make notes under the following headings:

- which things make a house burglar-friendly?


- how would you prevent your houses from being burglar-friendly?
Then each group presents their ideas using the notes.
