Chapter 1
The problem and it's background

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence significantly influenced many business fields, education, and

technology areas. It also refers to machines stimulating human intelligence, enabling tasks like
learning, reasoning, and decision making. So, it highly influences academia, especially students
taking a program under the study track Accountancy, Business, and Management during the past
years. AI generally contributes to wonderful opportunities for improved learning experiences by
providing excellent avenues for academic support. On the other hand, big challenges may emerge
and result in possible negative impacts such as bias in decision making, and cyber security risk.
AI tools are excellent academic support to students in ABM; however, overutilization of them
can make such students dependent, as it dilutes critical thinking, creativity, and judgment skills.

According to Khan, S. (2023, August 8), the role of Artificial Intelligence revolutionizes
education worldwide while bringing many benefits, such as learner-centered learning, efficient
administrative support, and numerous others. However, significant challenges are associated with
the inclusion of AI because it affects most students, teachers, and academic institutions globally.

According to UNESCO (2024), the excessive dependence on AI in learning curricula

deprives students of developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Students are
more likely to be over-dependent on AI for content generation, making them passive rather than
intellectually active.

According to the World Economic Forum (2021), this trend is worrying regarding
academic honesty since more and more students will seek AI-generating essays or solutions to
present an easier path toward conventional learning, thereby risking the credibility of worldwide
achievements through education. More than that, Brookings Institution asserts that most AI
systems collect so much data from students; such huge information would put it at risk of breach
and illegal access, infringing on students' safety and security.

This research aims to study the negative effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on ABM
students, specifically how it affects their critical thinking, decision-making skills, mental health,
and academic performance. This study explores how over-reliance in AI can lead to the
dampening of cognitive development, creativity, and independence of thought. This study further
seeks to learn how AI tools have an impact on the well-being and academic performance of
students by providing recommendations as to how the teachers and the learners can work with
AI, yet not miss the basics.
Furthermore, in this study we should explore and understand the negative impact of
Artificial intelligence (AI) among ABM 11 students. By focusing on researching, it might gather
insight on how Artificial intelligence (AI) affects students’ mental health, academic performance
and also their personal relationship or well-being.

Moreover, AI’s ability to provide learning experiences might inadvertently contribute to

lack of interaction, and collaboration among students. Additionally, with the rapid pace of the
technology it might have concerns about data privacy and inequalities in academic opportunities.
It also brings out more challenges that may negatively influence students' academic
performance.

Therefore, this study aims to acquire the specific negative effects of AI on ABM students
academic performance to gather insights on how the traditional education system can balance AI
while ensuring the development of the students well-being.
Theoretical Framework

This study is backed by three theories that explain Artificial Intelligence negative effects
on ABM 11 students academic performances. According to Dandura (1986) who discovered the
theory of social cognitive, this emphasizes the negative effects of AI on student learning that
might be applied to their behaviors and negatively impact their academic performances , since it
may harm their focus on studying and may become dependent on AI to solve their activities as
students.

Then, on sweller(1988) descovery it defines Cognitive Load Theory that students have a
limited capacity of processing information because of the effect of AI tools dependency and
over-load data that hinder students ability to make a progress on their academic performance
without relying on Artificial Intelligence.

Furthermore is Theory of Technology Determinism that accord with McLuhan(1964) this

implies that tells individuals that with AI tools it will be determine that students who are using
AI tools might reduce their critical thinking, creativity skills, and decision making.

Therefore, the three theories show that the negative effects of Artificial Intelligence are
relevant for the students of ABM for them to know the effect of AI on themselves to remind
them of what impact it will cause. So, they should be cautious to prevent being affected by its
negative effects. In the end, it could help students to strive higher with honors of themselves
without the Artificial Intelligence to achieve their deserving academic achivement.
Conceptual Framework

Figure1. Conceptual Framework

Figure1. This conceptual framework is for the negative effects of Artificial intelligence on
Academic performance of Accountancy, Business, and Management 11 students at Binan
Integrated National High School. This is about Independent (IV) and Dependent Variable (DV)
framework, The IV are the Negative effects of Artificial Intelligence and on the other hands the
ABM 11 Academic performance as an DV.

Therefore, in figure1 the Independent Variable is the Negative effects of Artificial

Intelligence. This variable defines the effect of AI in a negative way either in students and
society. Like, reducing the ability to be open minded and having uncertainty about being taken
by an applying job. Then, some negativity that affects human creativity on awakening
technology life.

Likewise, in Dependent Variable ABM 11 Academic performance at BINHS is about how

they did in their Academic performance that was influenced by the negativity of Artificial
Intelligence. That includes being dependent on AI tools and the way their ability to think
critically about their activities are weakening.

Between the two variables, it presents their connection and prevention as a variable. It has
a strong sense that needed for these two variables to prevent them from colliding with each other.
So, that it can lead to a good way to prevent the negativity and being independent to answer and
pull yourself up to have a good academic performance.
Statement of the problem

This study investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) can influence the learning and
personal development of Grade 11 ABM students. It seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of

1.1.. Gender

1.2. Age

1.3. Student or Teacher

2. How does the use of AI affects the critical thinking and decision making skills of ABM
students?

3. How does AI usage impact the mental and emotional well being of ABM students?

4. What specific strategies can ABM students develop to reduce dependency on AI tools
while maintaining their academic performance?
Scope/limitation and Delimitations

This study focuses on ABM students enrolled in senior high schools in the Philippines. The
research will examine the negative effects of Al on their academic performance, cognitive skills,
creativity, and psychological well-being. It will not explore the broader societal or technological
impacts of Al on other fields or demographics.

The study will be limited to qualitative data gathered from interviews, surveys, and focus group
discussions with ABM 11 students. The findings of this study are not intended to generalize the
entire student population but rather to provide a specific perspective on the ABM students'
experiences.

Significance of the study

This study is significant to the following:

COMMUNITY - Manipulation and Misinformation -AI can be used to spread misinformation or

manipulate public opinion, especially through deepfakes, or social media bots. This can
influence elections, create social unrest, and distort public perception of key issues.

STAFF- Skill Gaps -As AI evolves, employees may struggle to keep up with new technological
demands. Workers who are not equipped with the necessary digital or technical skills may find
themselves at a disadvantage.

TEACHERS -there are many teachers who become biased towards students, just like those who
are in honors who are not really that good, and the unfair thing is that they only used critical
thinking which the teachers don't notice.

PARENTS - Dependency on Technology: Parents might worry that their children are becoming
too reliant on AI for answers or entertainment, reducing their problem-solving skills or creativity.
Over time, children might also struggle with a lack of independent thinking or critical
decision-making.

STUDENTS - the thinking of young people is reduced and they cannot use their critical thinking
with what we call AI. young people can become overly dependent on technology, leading to a
decrease in their ability to think critically, solve problems independently, or develop strong
analytical skills.
