January 5th Parent Meeting Meeting Notes:
Topics: 1. Organization of a pack 2. Pack 660 Re-charter 3. Gold and Blue Ceremony Key Points: 1. Volunteer for a position! We can find something that you feel comfortable doing. If time commitment is an issue, we can work with that! 2. Re-Charter is past due. In order to complete I (Marilee) must have at a minimum: a. Pack Committee Chair b. Pack Committee Member c. Cubmaster d. Den Leaders (3) Some of these roles already have volunteers, and some may wish to move up with their boys, but I need to hear it directly from you so I know you are committed! I want to fill everyone in a position! 3. With Re-charter, annual dues for each person are due: i. Boys: $15.00. Add $12 if you want to receive the Boys Life Subscription (WORTH IT!) ii. Adult Leaders: $15.00. Scouting magazine in included. 4. Boys officially cross-over June 1 (Tigers become Wolves, Wolves become Bears, etc.) 5. Spring Recruitment: this will be happening soon. The goal is to recruit Kindergartners into the Cub Scouts as new Tiger Cubs. Because this happens in the spring, we are highly encouraged to continue meeting during the summer at least once a month.
Organization of a Pack
We started off the meeting talking about the organization of a pack:
If you go to: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/AboutCubScouts/ThePack.aspx you can find this chart (that I stole) and click on each title to read a description.
Pack 660 really needs an engaged and active Pack Committee to make things run smoothly and organized. Getting this started needs to be a priority.
PACK COMMITTE Within the Pack Committee there are roles for each of the members: Pack Committee Chair Treasurer (Note: We learned at the meeting that any money raised is technically money of Exploration Place (charter organization.) We discussed asking Dustin from Exploration Place, because of this. Advancement Chair Training Chair (for adults)
There are many possibly roles we basically need to make sure the bases are covered and nobody is overloaded!
The pack committee: Meets once a month, separate from the pack/den meetings Sets up annual calendar of activities and outings Plans and makes necessary arrangements for activities Creates budget and sets funding goals Ensures adult partners are trained Recruits volunteers Enters advancements for boys Keeps everyone informed of upcoming events Completes Re-charter for pack Plan the Blue and Gold Ceremony
PACK TRAINER (Not needing a volunteer) Several possibilities for ensuring adult leaders are trained were discussed. The easiest (and most frequent) methods of obtaining training are through the online BSA system or the monthly Round Table Meetings held the First Thursday of each month 7-8pm. There are additional events that provide further training including BALLOO (the first weekend in May), and POWWOW (end of summer beginning of Fall I missed getting the date down). In addition, discussion was made that we might have a trainer come in and personally train the adults in the pack. CUB MASTER The Cubmaster is basically in charge of the monthly pack meeting (Planning, organizing, presenting awards, developing a theme, sharing theme with Den Leaders, Working with Den Leaders develop a skit or activity to show off during pack meetings. This person should also be the go between Thomas and the Pack. ASSISTANT CUBMASTER Helps the Cubmaster with Planning the monthly pack meetings. DEN LEADERS (TIGER, CUB, WEBELOS) Develop and give leadership in carrying out the pack program of the den to ensure the boys have responsible fun and make progress on achievements. ASSISTANT DEN LEADERS/ADULT PARTNERS (Tigers) Provide assistance to the Den Leaders
PACK RE-CHARTER
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) requires each Scouting Packto renew its Charter annually. This assures that the Chartered Organization still is using Scouting's programs to serve youth and assures that the unit roster is up to date at least once a year. This also helps keeps us insured. How this effects you: Annual dues are due:
o o
Boys: $15.00. Add $12 if you want to receive the Boys Life Subscription (WORTH IT!) Adult Leaders: $15.00. Scouting magazine in included.
I need to check with Thomas to see if there is paperwork and if there are receipts. I will find out today and let all of you know by Saturday, if not sooner.
I need to confirm your contact information I need confirmation of your volunteer status I need completed adult volunteer applications if not already on file
I will be calling/emailing/Facebooking/stalking you at the meetings () to make sure this gets done quickly. This was due at the end of February.
BLUE AND GOLD CEREMONY
We need to plan a Blue and Gold Ceremony for the boys. I stole this blurb:
Most Cub Scouts celebrate Scouting Anniversary Week in February with a "birthday party" called the blue and gold banquet. In nearly all packs, the blue and gold banquet is the highlight of the year. It brings families together for an evening of fun and cheer. It's often the pack meeting for February. The purpose of the blue and gold banquet is to celebrate the pack's anniversary, thank pack leaders and other adults who have helped the pack, and inspire the leaders, Scouts, and parents. Packs often like to invite former members and other Scouting or community leaders to take part in their blue and gold banquet. The banquet can be like a regular pack meeting, with songs, skits, stunts, and awards. Or it can be something different and a little more special. Your pack may decide to bring in an entertainer such as a magician or a storyteller. Or you could have a video or slide show of what the pack did over the past year.
One thing it does not mention is that this is typically when the boys get the badges they have received (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, etc.) Obviously, it is not February anymore, but it is still a very important event! Thomas will contact Marcia, someone who has lots of experience planning Blue and Gold events. A suggestion was to invite an Indian dance team.
