1. ATTITUDE DURING PERFORMANCE
Appearance; Dressing code and prepared

2. Collects information from the client
Asks the client personal particulars and writes the data on the
relevant form/clerking sheet, Informs the client on antenatal
services offered by the clinic and asks the client for the type
of service she is looking for, then obtains consent
3. Asks about the present pregnancy
Gravidity and parity, LNMP and EDD, Current health
state, any complaints the woman has, any symptoms of a
disease/health problem.
4. Past obstetric history;
Asks about events which occurred in previous
pregnancies, that may have influence on the management
of the current pregnancy.
5. History of previous pregnancies outcome including child
spacing: Difficult delivery: stillbirths (macerated or fresh),
Early neonatal death, prolonged labour, Macrosomia(big
baby), Caesarean Section, vacuum extraction
6. Previous gynaecological history and surgical procedures;
Asks age of menarche, menstrual period duration, blood loss,
cycle length, dysmenorrhoea and dyspareunia if present; asks
about previous surgical procedure such as myomectomy,
repaired fistula, third degree tear, history of female genital
mutilation; Ask about use of contraceptive methods; History
of been treated for sexually transmitted infection.
7. Medical history; Asks about medical conditions that may
complicate pregnancy such as; Diabetes mellitus, Sickle cell
disease, Hypertension , Heart disease, Thyroid disease, UTI,
Anaemia, Tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS, Epilepsy, Asthma
Any medications e.g. ARV, anti-epileptic, antihypertensive
8. General examination
Height, weight, Blood pressure, Look for signs of anaemia
assesses properly, the breast for signs of pregnancy and
presence of lump, assesses oedema of both lower limbs
9. Abdominal examination
Inspection assesses; for signs of pregnancy ,observes the shape
of the abdomen
Palpation of the abdomen: Palpate Liver, spleen and
kidneys for size and shape.
Palpation; Obstetric palpation-Leopold’s manoeuvres to
determine foetal lie and back, the fundus, the presenting part,
direction and degree of flexion of the head;
Auscultation; determines the foetal heart rate and detects any
deviation from normal
10. Assesses other affected system thoroughly [e.g.
Cardiovascular system, Respiratory system or Nervous
system]
11. Determines necessary investigation: Haemoglobin, urine
for protein and microscopy, VDRL/RPR and HIV test
12. Provides prophylaxis if required:
T.T injection, Mebendazole, iron tablets, folic acid, IPT, ART
if needed
13. Gives health education on danger signs such as PV bleeding,
severe headache, dizziness, severe oedema, cessation of foetal
kicks e.t.c; preparation for delivery and determines date of
next visit
