c) A spherical balloon 1m diameter contains gas at 240kPa and 290 K. when


the gas inside the balloon is heated, its pressure raises to 485kPa and
pressure is being proportional to the diameter. Determine the work done by 09 CO1 L3
the gas inside the balloon.

2. a) Define the following


i. Thermodynamic System
ii. Thermodynamic equilibrium

b) Show that work and heat are path functions.

c) A Celsius and Fahrenheit thermometers both are immersed in a fluid, and the
numerical value recorded on both thermometers is same. Determine the
temperature of the fluid expressed as K and R and also find that identical 09 CO1 L3
value shown by thermometers.

3. a) Define the following

b) State first law of thermodynamics for a closed system undergoing a process


and prove that internal energy is a property of the system. 07 CO2 L2

c) A nozzle is a device for increasing the velocity of steadily flowing stream.


At inlet ta a certain nozzle, the fluid parameters are: Enthalpy =2850kJ/kg,
velocity = 50m/s, area= 0.1m2 and specific volume = 0.18m3/kg. At the
discharge end the enthalpy is 2650kj/kg and the specific volume is 09 CO2 L3
0.49m3/kg. Make calculations for the velocity of fluid and the exit area of the
nozzle. The nozzle is horizontal and there is negligible heat loss from it.

4. a) What is perpetual motion machine of first kind (PMMK1)? 04 CO2 L1
b) Derive an expression for SFEE and state the assumptions made. 07 CO2 L2
c) In a system, the work and heat interactions for a process ‘A’ are 22kJ and 18
kJ and for process ‘B’ between the same end conditions, the heat input is
11kJ. Determine change in internal energy and work done in process ‘B’. if a

cycle is formed with processes ‘A’ and ‘B’, then prove that first law is
obeyed.

5. a) What are the corollaries of second law?

b) State clausius and Kevin plank statements of second law of thermodynamics

c) A heat engine is supplied with 300 kJ/s of heat at 2900C and heat rejection
take place at 8.50C. the results are as follows:
i. 215 kJ/s are rejected
ii. 150 kJ/s are rejected

c) Steam expands isentropic ally from a pressure of 20 bar and 3000C to 2 bar.
By taking mass of the steam as 0.9 kg. Determine end conditions and the 10 CO4 L3
work done.
