Major Test 1: Question 1, 1.1 and 1.2
For the reaction: A+2B→C
1.1 If the reaction is irreversible and has elementary kinetics, what is the rate law? (4)
𝑟 = − 𝑘 𝐶 𝐶
1.2 What is the δ for this reaction? (2)
𝛿 = − − 1 = −2
Major Test 1: Question 1, 1.3
1.3 The feed consists of a liquid-phase aqueous solution of A, B and some C. Express
the rate of reaction solely as a function of conversion for a flow system; assume that the
reactor operates at a constant density and constant temperature. (Hint: start by drawing
up a stoichiometric table). (22)

Major Test 1: Question 1, 1.4
1.4 The reaction is being done in a liquid-phase isothermal CSTR, the rate constant is 15
m6.mol-2.s-1, the feed flowrate of A is 30.0 mol.s-1 , and the feed flowrate of C is 6.0 mol.s-1.
The volumetric feed flowrate is 3900 m3.min-1.
1.4.1 A and B are fed to the reactor in a molar ratio of 1: , so that there is excess B present.
If the percentage conversion is 63%, what is the reactor volume? (Give the answer to your
calculation to 6 significant figures, then in the final step round to the correct number of
figures for the information given in the question.) (20)

Major Test 1: Question 1, 1.4.3
1.4.3 Compare your answers in 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 and explain your answer in terms of
concentrations and rate of reaction. (4)
Using a feed with excess B (1: ), gave a reactor of 23 m3 to achieve a conversion of 63%.
When a stoichiometric feed was used, 1:2, the required reactor volume to achieve the same
conversion was 63 m3. The reactor volume required is almost triple when the stoichiometric
feed is used. This is due to the higher concentration of B when there is excess B, which results
in a higher average rate in the CSTR and smaller reactor to achieve the same conversion.
