ASKING QUESTIONS: PART 3
Prediction
When we say what we think is going to happen, we use going to, not present continuous.
Compare:
e.g. She is late. She is going to miss her train.
She is late. She is missing her train.
Stative verbs
Stative verbs are verbs which are not an action. They are used for emotions and feelings
(e.g. love, like, hate) senses (e.g. see, hear, taste) and possessions (have, want, own). We do
not usually use these verbs with continuous forms. Compare:
You are going to love this hotel.
You are loving this hotel.
We are going to want to sleep when we get home.
We are wanting to sleep when we get home.
Note: some verbs have both stative and non-stative forms.
e.g.
see (to meet) → non-stative see (with your eyes) → stative
We are seeing Ian next Tuesday. She is going to see the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
We are going to see Ian next Tuesday. She is seeing the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
think (to have an opinion) → stative think (have in my head) → non-stative
You are going to think they have a beautiful office. I’m going to think about what to say to my boss.
You are thinking they have a beautiful office. I am thinking about what to say to my boss.

ASKING QUESTIONS: PART 3
Now match the questions to paragraphs A – H in the article. Then, listen to check your answers.
Business in the Future
Tom Openshaw’s plans
A.
We are planning to write some computer games that students can use to learn mathematics. It’s a very exciting
project because it might be really successful.
B.
We already have a lot of schools who use our products at the moment, so we are going to talk to them about what
they need and we are going to go and watch students in maths lessons.
C.
Our products should sell all over the world as we don’t have to worry about the language because numbers are
the same all over the world. We are planning to have characters in our games who show the students what to do
without using words. We have a lot of interest from schools in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
D.
To begin with, we are going to do market research in Europe because it’s closer. But we will be going to classrooms
all over the world to talk to teachers and students.
E.
We will make a test version to begin with that we will give to schools and we will see what they say about it. If it
helps the students to learn, then we know it is successful.
F.
We will have to talk to our marketing department and make sure that we advertise our product. The most
important thing is to make sure it works really well and that we have students using it as soon as possible.
G.
We will have finished in two years from now. We will make sure it is ready for the beginning of the school year,
but it is a difficult project and it will take time to do everything we need to do. We will be very busy.
H.
When the project finishes, we will have started working on the next project. I don’t know what that will be yet,
but I hope it will be as exciting as this project.
