Case Law Report – Team Project

Instructions
Each group must submit one Case Law Report based on a Canadian case law related to any
area of law (legal topic or concept) covered in the Course. Cases listed/available on the
textbook are NOT allowed.
The case law report must include a summary of the area of law relevant to the chosen case law,
its most import facts, its main legal issue (s), the court’s decision and the reasons for such
decision, and the lesson(s) learned.

Components to be considered:

I. Area of Law
Briefly describe and explain the area of law that is pertinent to your chosen case law.

II. Important Facts

Summarise the important facts in a way that they connect to the area of law, as well as to the
legal issue(s) to be addressed by the court. The longer the facts, the lower the marks. Be brief
and concise.

III. Legal Issue(s)

State the main legal issue(s), i.e., the question(s) that the court will address (has addressed) in
its decision.
IV. Court's Decision
Describe and explain the court’s decision and the reasons for such decision.
V. Lesson Learned
Briefly and concisely state the main lesson learned from either a business or a legal
perspective.

Further Instructions
• The Important Facts, Legal Issue(s), and Decision are all concentrated on explaining the
same legal principles described in the Area of Law
• The Decision essentially answers the question put in the Legal Issue(s), even to the extent
of using the same or similar language.
• Under the decision, you may briefly describe the parties’ argument and counterargument
and connect the court’s decision with an explanation of why the winning argument was
successful. This may help make the case law report clear and understandable.
