QUESTION 1: MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS
Four options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Each question
has only ONE correct answer. Choose the answer and write only the letter (A – D) next to
the question number (1.1 – 1.10) in the ANSWER BOOK.
1.1 Which ONE of the following pairs of physical quantities are vectors?
A. Force and distance
B. Velocity and speed
C. Force and acceleration
D. Speed and displacement (2)
1.2 A block with a mass of 4 kg is pulled upwards along a frictionless slope, inclined
at an angle 𝜃,with a force F, as shown in the sketch below.
Which ONE of the following equations can be used to calculate the magnitude
of the normal force (N)?
A. N = (4)(9,8)sin 𝜃
B. N = F – (4)(9,8)cos 𝜃
C. N = F + (4)(9,8)cos 𝜃
D. N = (4)(9,8)cos 𝜃 (2)

1.4 Four forces act on a point, as indicated in the diagram:
The magnitude of the components of the resultant (net) force in the horizontal
(Fx) and the vertical (Fy) directions are …
A. Fx = 3 N and Fy = 6 N
B. Fx = 1 N and Fy = 4 N
C. Fx = 2 N and Fy = 2 N
D. Fx = 4 N and Fy = 2 N (2)
1.5 If a mug is placed on a table, the reaction force due to the weight of the mug,
according to Newton’s third law, is the force of the …

1.7 The mass of a man on earth is 85 kg. What will be the mass of the same man on
the surface of a planet which has the same mass as earth but half the radius of
earth?
A. 42,5 kg
B. 85 kg
C. 340 kg
D. 21,25 kg (2)
1.9 A negative charge of 1 μC, which is free to move, is placed at a distance 2r from
a positive charge of 4 μC.

QUESTION 2
Three forces, F1, F2 and F3, are applied to a crate of 15 kg as shown in the diagram below.
2.1 Refer to the information in the diagram above and give a reason why forces F1,
F2 and F3 are classified as vectors. (2)
2.2 Define the term resultant vector. (2)
2.3 Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force. (9)
[13]
QUESTION 3
A box, with a mass of 45 kg, is pulled with a force of 90 N at an angle of 50o to the horizontal.
The box moves at a CONSTANT VELOCITY.
3.3 Calculate
3.3.1 The magnitude of the horizontal component of the applied force. (2)
3.4 Will the coefficient of kinetic friction change if the angle of the applied force is
decreased? Write only YES or NO and give a reason. (2)

QUESTION 4
Two blocks of mass 8 kg and 4 kg respectively, are joined with an inelastic string of negligible
mass. The string runs over a frictionless pulley. The 8 kg block is on a horizontal surface
while the 4 kg block is on an inclined plane of 40 o with the horizontal. The coefficient of
kinetic friction for both blocks is 0 ,2. The 4 kg block accelerates down the slope.
4.2 Draw a labelled free-body diagram of all the forces acting on the 4 kg block. (4)
4.4 How will the acceleration compare if the angle of inclination with the surface is
increased from 40o to 60o? Choose from GREATER THAN, LESS THAN or THE
SAME. Explain the answer (3)

QUESTION 5
A satellite of mass 1 000 kg is orbiting the earth at a distance of 200 km from the surface
of the Earth as shown on the diagram below.
5.2 Calculate the magnitude of the force that the earth exerts on the satellite to
keep it in orbit. (5)
5.3 Calculate the weight of the satellite on the earth’s surface. (3)

6.2 Three point charges, Q1, Q2 and Q3, carrying charges of +6 μC, -3 μC and +5 μC
respectively, are arranged in space as shown in the diagram below. The distance
between Q3 and Q1 is 30 cm and that between Q3 and Q2 is 10 cm.
