Chapter 1: General and basic information

Tool 1: TRANSECT WALK

Number of participants: 16 male: 7 female: 9

Description:
The transect walk is a tool to discuss information related to land use of the village. Transects
are done with structured walks through typical village landscape. Such walks can cover part
of the village or the entire village, taking an hour or up to some
hours. Transects consist of two elements: the walk and a
diagram that records the information of the walks.

Objectives:
Identify typical land use types and their characteristics.

With whom:
Mixed group of farmers (female and male)

The sources have dried, so source development with proper fencing is required. Also, soil
testing is to be carried out and proper actions to be advised to us so that the soil fertility is
improved.

Tool 2: BRIEF VILLAGE HISTORY

Number of participants: 16 male: 7 female: 9

Description:
This tool helps the villagers to remind all important events which happened in the
village in the past. It also helps villagers of the community
to be aware of their effort passing each period of their
recent history.

Draw a line on A0 paper. One end of the line will be ‘now’.

Explain to the households that this is the History Line

Ask the households to recall key events (positive and negative)

throughout history (from the earliest to now) and the year they
occurred.

Objectives:
 Find out general information and important events in the recent village history.
 Identify important events that brought about some economic, social, cultural etc
change in the village.
 Change in agricultural trend due to these events.

Tool 3: SEASONAL CALENDAR

Number of participants: 16 male: 7 female: 9

Description:
A seasonal calendar is a participatory tool to explore seasonal changes (e.g. gender- specific
workload, diseases, income, expenditure etc.).

Objectives:
Learn about changes in livelihoods over the year and to show the seasonality of agricultural
and non agricultural workload, food availability, human diseases, gender- specific income
and expenditure, water, forage, credit.

Methods:
The VDAP team discuss and fill in the form with the values (quantity, intensity, ¼)
for each topic (see sample)

Tool 5: RESOURCE MAP
Number of participants: 31 male: 21 female: 10

Description:
The Village Resource Map is a tool that helps
us to learn about a community and its resource
base. The primary concern is not to develop an
accurate map but to get useful information
about local perceptions of resources. The
VDAP members should further develop and
detail the content of the map according to what
is important to them.

Objectives:
To learn the villagers' perception of what
natural resources are found in the community
and how they are used.

With whom:
Female and male focus groups

Step 1: Assess current situation

 What resources are abundant? (potential)
 What resources are scarce? (constraints)
 Does everyone have equal access to land?
 Do women have access to land?
 What is the quantum of fallow land (land left uncultivated)
 Do the poor have access to land?
 Where do people go to collect water? Who collects water?
 Where do people go to collect firewood? Who collects firewood?
 Where do people go to graze livestock?
 What kind of development activities do you carry out as a whole community?

etc), Suntola bagan (orange, etc), Alainchi bari (cardamom, trees), Bans ghari and jungle
(bamboo, trees), Kothe bari (Kitchen garden), Modern farming techniques (Floriculture,
Greenhouse, etc…) have been detailed below in this Chapter. Others like Pakha bari, Siru
bari, Bhasmey (Naya bari) etc may be included if there is a need.

Tool 6: Khet (Maize-Rice cropping pattern)

Number of participants: 16 male: 8 female: 8

Every year the production is decreasing Due to soil erosion and no usage of pesticides.

Step 3: Find out possible solutions for the three problems

Solutions
There has to be a provision of a marketing shed at a proper location within the GPU so that
everyone from all the wards of the GPU can come and sell their produce. Also, a marketing
pick up point by SIMFED can also be provided.

Training on modern techniques is to be carried out and technical assistance is to be given on

Tool 19: Venn diagram

Number of participants: 15 male: 7 female: 8

Description:
The Venn diagram shows institutions, organisations, groups and important individuals found
in the village, as well as the villagers view of their importance in the community.
Additionally the diagram explains who participates in these groups in terms of gender and
wealth. The institutional relationship diagram also indicates how close the contact and
cooperation between those organisations and groups is.

Objectives:
 Identify external and internal organisations/groups/important persons active in the
community
 Identify who participates in local organisations/institutions by gender and wealth
 Figure out how the different organisations and groups relate to each other in terms of
contact, co-operation, flow of information and provision of services.
Step 1: Assess current situation

Tool 20: Assessment of SHGs

Number of participants: 15 male: 7 female: 8

Description:
The SHGs play in important role in providing internal lending and credit to the poor as well
as facilitating collective initiatives. SHGs can be formed under Governmental programs like
SGSY under SREDA, by NGOs, by missionary organizations, by banks like NABARD, and
others like SIMFED, ICAR etc. We do a ranking of the SHGs to identify which ones are the
best performing and why.

Objectives:
 Identify SHGs active in the community, who has formed them and which activities
they undertake
 Assess the role of SHGs in providing incomes to the poor
 Identify potentials and main problems
 Figure out appropriate solutions and activities

Number of participants: 15 male: 7 female: 8

Description:
Springs are the main source of drinking water. The water from springs is stored in storage
tanks and distributed using GI pipes to individual households. Winter months from Dec to
Mar are the lean months when the discharge of springs reduces and consequently there is
water scarcity.

Objectives:
 Assess the status of drinking water sources
 Assess the status of drinking water supply system
 Identify main problems related to drinking water sources and supply system

Description:
Functional toilets in homes, schools, hospitals etc play an important role in ensuring total
sanitation. Rising rural disposable incomes combined with the increasing outreach of
packaged goods has made waste management a formidable challenge. Scattered nature of
this waste and limited quantity make its management as a business model not easy.
