POST-ASSESSMENT: Hunger Games

Name: ONDE, LEEYA FRANCHEZKA G. Date: 2/12/2025
Year & Section: 1-AMT Score:

In a document file, answer the following questions reflectively and comprehensively:

1.) Who are the main characters of the film?

The main characters of the film ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ are:
Katniss Everdeen ‘Katniss’ - The protagonist, she is a 16 years old girl residing in
District 12. She is the one who volunteered as a tribute in exchange for her sister that
is selected to join the reaping to represent their District .
Peeta Mellark ‘Peeta’ - The male tribute representing District 12, he has feelings for
Katniss.
Effie Trinket - She is from Capitol and an escort for District 12 in selecting tributes
in the Hunger Games.
Haymitch Abernathy ‘Haymitch’ - Former champion from District 12, mentoring
Katniss and Peeta.

2.) Why are the Hunger Games celebrated?

The Hunger Games are ruled by the Capitol as a form of control to remind the
districts of their past failed rebellion and instill fear among the people. So they use the people
living Districts of Panem to fight with each other that serves as punishment and
entertainment. We can clearly see here that the Capitol's power is a threat and dominating
making them feel inferior and submit. The Hunger Games is presented as a grand spectable,
wherein there is a division between the oppressed districts and privileged capitol.

3.) How do you interpret the line: "May the odds be ever in your favor."
During watching the film, I observed that they use the phrase “May the odds be ever
in your favor” before the Selection of Tribute or in a midst of challenging situation. This
phrase is conveying a simple way of telling someone good luck. Yet I found it ironic due to
how Hunger Games are based on survival and luck because the tributes dies either in the
hands of others or natural causes. This form of entertainment for Capitol reflects their cruelty.

4.) Contrast the community of the Capitol and District 12 via:

a) Demographic (characteristics of the people)

Capitol - Obviously they are wealthy, wearing luxury items that express how
obsessed they are at fashion, carefree, and privileged. It is also where the nation's
most powerful live.
District 12 - Completely opposite from Capitol, they are poor, struggling, and mostly
focuses on survival. People from Districts hunts for food.

b) History (past events that shaped the community)

Capitol - The Capitol arises and became dominant after suppressing a numerous
rebellions from the districts that led to a start of the Hunger Games.
District 12 - The District 12 participates in a rebellion movement but was defeated.
After that, they experienced an extreme poverty, scarcity of materials, and harsh
treatment from the Capitol.

c) Economy (financial status of people)

Capitol - They are wealthy, technologically-advanced, and have easy access to
everything, making them have a lavish lifestyle.
District 12 - On the other hand. they are poor and rely on hunting and gathering. They
can illegally trade as well as buying and selling items that the capitol isn't allowed to
have just to survive.

d) Culture (the way people live)

Capitol - Extravagant fashions, luxury lifestyles, and people loves entertainment.
District 12 - Simple and people relies on survival.

e) Structure (pick one: physical, social, political)

Capitol - They have a president named Snow, and a government that instills Capitol's
superiority.
District 12 - No political freedom, and they are oppressed by the Capitol.

5.) What are the challenges the main characters faced in trying to engage with the
community of the Capitol?
As Katniss and Peeta came from the Districts of Panem, they are ‘culture-shocked’
after seeing the lavish lifestyles of Capitol citizens; their technology is beyond and more
advanced compared to their hometown. The two tributes from District 12 must perform and
play along the Capitol's expectation as ‘Star-crossed lovers’ during Hunger Games to gain
sponsors.

6.) Explain: Which of the following items below do you think are what best
represents the role of the main characters in their community/the Capitol as the
youth (pick as many that applies to your argument):
a) Volunteerism - Katniss volunteers to take Primrose’s (her sister) place, she protects
because she cares for her loved ones. Showing a great amount of sacrifice, courage,
compassion that sparks a hope among citizens of Districts of Panem.

b) Social Responsibility - Katniss becomes the symbol of hope to every other districts,
her actions ignites something deep inside their hearts to believe they could challenge
the Capitol's evil-doings and fight for better future and that that drives them for
another rebellion. Her actions inspired others to rise up against the system.

c) Social Mobilization - Because of Katniss’ bold actions and strong sense of justice,
courage, and resistance. It inspires rebellion movements against the capitol.

7.) Hypothetically, if you were in the world of Hunger Games, would you be willing
to volunteer to save the life of another/your community? Why? Why not?
If I were in the world of Hunger Games, and will be in her shoes where my sibling
will be chosen, I'd feel the same by obligating to protect them. by volunteering as a tribute.
Although, if my survival skills aren't that polished and lacking, it could be risky and futile. If
I'd go, my family will be left without a support.

8.) Explain: "Hope is the only thing stronger than fear."

Even in times we feel inferior and oppressed, a hope can drive us to overcome our fears and
drive us to take an immediate action. As we can see in the Hunger Games, the ruler of Capitol
named President Snow fears ‘Hope’ knowing it could trigger another rebellion movement and
unity among the 13 districts. Hope is a powerful weapon that can help people protect
themselves from all forms of harm. In otherwords, It is a fuel
