SPECIALTIES
Nipaguard CG provides protection in a wide range of products. It is heat stable up to www.ics.clariant.com

50 °C and should be added to formulations which need a hot process during the cooling
stage.

Applications
Typical use concentration of NIpaguard CG in cosmetic formulations ranges from 0.05-
0.1%.
The presence of calcium and magnesium ions in hard water provides a significant positive
influence on Nipaguard CG stability. The presence of amine impurities in raw materials
has a deleterious effect on the stability of Nipaguard CG; a simple reduction in pH to below
7, converting the amine to its salt will normally solve the problem.
Some reducing agents like sulfated and sulfonated surfactants (due to their residual sulfite
or bisulfite contents), strong nucleophiles and secondary amines can decompose
Nipaguard CG.
General recommendations that will enhance stability and improve the performance of
Nipaguard CG during the formulation development:

• Use slightly acidic pH values especially when the formulation has free DEA
• Eliminate residual SO2 when present with a suitable oxidizing agent
• Avoid high temperatures (above 50°C).
• Use preferable hard water
• To improve viscosity, use MgCl2 rather than NaCl
• Some fillers such as talc, titanium oxides, kaolin could absorb or degrade
Nipaguard CG

Since the components of cosmetic and toiletry formulations vary considerable and may
have an impact on the effect of preservatives, we recommend each manufacturer to
confirm the efficacy and stability of Nipaguard CG in formulations challenging them with
microorganisms commonly found in cosmetics products.

Microbial Activity
Nipaguard CG exhibits antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria, yeasts and
molds. This is illustrated by the following table which shows the minimum inhibitory
concentration (MIC) of Nipaguard CG against examples of different groups of
microorganisms.
