Assignment

The document outlines a hydraulics assignment for second-year Civil Engineering students, consisting of various problems related to fluid mechanics, including calculations of dynamic and kinematic viscosity, pressure conversions, manometer readings, buoyant forces, and metacentric heights. Students are required to apply principles of hydraulics to determine forces, pressures, and equilibrium conditions for different scenarios involving fluids and solid bodies. The assignment emphasizes practical applications of fluid properties and pressure measurement techniques.

Hydraulics Assignment for 2nd year Civil Engineering students

1. The space between two square plates is filled with oil. Each side of the plate is 60cm.The
thickness of the oil film is 12.5mm. The upper plate, which moves at 2.5m/s, requires a force of
98.1 N to maintain the speed. Determine (a) the dynamic viscosity and (b) the kinematic viscosity
of oil in stokes. If the specific gravity of oil is 0.95.

2. Convert the pressure of 101.043Kn/m2 into

a) Meter of water

b) Meter of oil (s=0.8)

c) Millimeter of mercury (s=13.6)
3. A simple manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil (s =0.80) flowing in the pipe. Its
right limb is open to the atmosphere and the left limb is connected to the pipe. The center of the
pipe is 900mm below the level of mercury (s = 13.6) in the right limb. If the difference of mercury
level in the limb is 150mm, determine the absolute pressure of the oil in the pipe in kN/m2

4. Calculate the pressure difference between point A and B in the manometer shown in the figure
below.

5. A block of wood 4m long, 3m wide and 2m high, floats in oil of specific gravity 0.75. a
clockwise moment holds the block in the position shown in figure below. Determine
a) The buoyant force acting on the block, and its position

b) The magnitude of the couple acting on the block

c) The metacentric height

6. Determine the total pressure force and its center of pressure by pressure prism method on a
rectangular surface of 1m wide and 3m deep when its upper edge is horizontal and

a. Coincides with water surface

b. 2m below the water surface

7. A solid cylinder of diameter 3m has a height of 2m. Find meta-centric height of the cylinder
when it is floating in water with its axis vertical and s.g of cylinder is 0.7. And justify its
equilibrium condition.
