Formal Examination is not the only Effective Way to Assess a Student’s Performance

Formal examinations and continual assessments have been used for many years to evaluate

students’ performance and understanding of the course content for many years. Formal

examination is a common method used by many institutions of learning to grade students after

doing exams under same environment. Continual assessment on the other hand, tests the

students’ performance over a long term after achieving certain skills or tasks. However, both

methods have their advantages and disadvantages in evaluating students’ performance. I believe

formal examinations cannot be used as the only method of effectively evaluating performance of

students.

Continual assessment involves evaluating the performance of the student throughout his

entire period of the course. The most common methods of continual assessment include;

assignments, project works and practical lessons. This method provides opportunities students

and their lectures to evaluate long term and practical performance that can be very useful when

one is employed. This method also enables teachers to be in contacts with the students most of

the time, helping the students who are lagging behind. Besides, this method enables students to

acquire practical skills for long term employment.

Formal examination on the other hand, requires students to sit for exams under strict

environment. All the students are supposed to answer the questions under stipulated time and

they are under strict invigilation. This method can be effective in measuring students’ ability to

memorize what they have learned throughout the course. It is also based on the principle of

fairness as all the students are exposed to the same conditions and time. Furthermore, this

method enables students who work hard in class to score higher grades compared to them who

did not work hard. However, good grades as a result of this method still remain questionable as

some students get rewarded marks which they do not deserve simply because they cheated or had

access to the examination materials prior to the exam.

In conclusion, both formal examination and continual assessment have their advantages

and limitations. It is important to integrate both the methods in evaluating the performance of

students at all levels.
