1_Introduction
1.1_Brief Introduction to Kathmandu Durbar Square
One of the most important cultural and historical landmarks of Nepal stands as
Kathmandu Durbar Square or Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square. This historical complex in the
center of Kathmandu maintained royal status under Malla and Shah dynasties before
becoming the cultural and administrative center for multiple centuries. The site showcases
Nepalese craftsmanship especially of the Newar artisans as it combines temples with palaces
and courtyards and sculptural installations. The site continues to function as a key religious
center that accepts worshippers and festival participants from Nepalese communities and
international visitors.

1.2_Importance of the Site as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognized Kathmandu Durbar Square
with its designation in 1979 because of its valuable historical aspects combined with its
cultural expressions and awesome architecture. The square showcases unique Nepalese
heritage through its wood-carved architecture combined with pagoda temples that resemble
the traditions of both Hinduism and Buddhism. The site functions as an emblem of Nepalese
national and cultural preservation which maintains information about the royal past as well as
religious practices. Protecting this site requires worldwide attention because it deals with
urban growth and nature-based hazards as well as environmental threats. Ongoing restoration
projects attempt to protect Bhaktapur Durbar Square for future generations despite the severe
damage from the 2015 earthquake.
1.3_ Purpose and Objectives of the Study
This research examines the historical along with architectural attributes and cultural value of
Kathmandu Durbar Square and its role as part of Nepal's heritage. The main research goals of

2_Historical Background
2.1_Origins of Kathmandu Durbar Square
During the Licchavi period which spanned from the 4th to 9th century AD the
foundations of Kathmandu Durbar Square were laid as settlements and palaces began to
appear in the Kathmandu Valley. Through the Malla dynasty (12th to 18th century) the
square gained its modern form which turned into a time of Nepalese art along with
architectural development and city design. The royal complex underwent transformation
during the Malla dynasty so the place evolved into a magnificent royal hub through
meticulous temple construction and development of elaborate court areas and royal
residences. Durbar Square received its name to indicate a royal setting which served as the
original political and cultural hub for medieval Nepal.

2.2_Role During the Malla and Shah Dynasties

2.2.1_The Malla Dynasty (12th – 18th Century)

The Malla kings tirelessly devoted their efforts to create Kathmandu Durbar Square
into its magnificent artistic and cultural center. The Malla kings transformed the square into
an essential location for religious activities administration together with artistic
development. Historic landmarks that include Hanuman Dhoka Palace Taleju Temple
together with Kumari Ghar (Residence of the Living Goddess) were constructed during this
Malla-era period. During the Malla dynasty the monarchs demonstrated their extensive
devotion to art by establishing remarkable wood carvings and stone sculptures together
with pagoda temples which today form the core elements of the square's aesthetic character.
Kathmandu Durbar Square served as a location for extravagant ceremonies that included
royal coronations mixed with religious celebrations and ceremonial royal parades. Social
and political meetings held at the square strengthened its position as the main center of the
Kathmandu Valley.

2.2.2_The Shah Dynasty (18th – 20th Century)

Newest Nepal developed when King Prithvi Narayan Shah defeated Kathmandu
Valley and established the Shah dynasty in 1768. A new period began its development at
Kathmandu Durbar Square after King Prithvi Narayan Shah took control of the Kathmandu
Valley in 1768. Kathmandu Durbar Square operated as the royal seat and administrative
hub of the kingdom from Shah rule up to when the royal court transferred to Narayanhiti
Palace in the twentieth century. The Shah dynasty brought multiple modifications which
integrated Malla-age architecture elements with new design features to the square. The
Hanuman Dhoka Palace under Shah rulers continued to operate as their royal residence
while the square maintained its cultural as well as religious significance.

splendor which makes it rank among the key heritage sites in all of South Asia.

3.1_Unique Architectural Styles (Newari, Malla-era Influence)

the indigenous inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley. The architectural features of the Newari
design include:

wooden struts and complex decorative carvings on their sloping roofs.
2. Shikhara-style Temples represent tower-like buildings which draw their design from
Indian temple architecture.
3. Newar Palace Construction Plans Incorporate Open-sided Courtyards for Proper
Ventilation and Preservation of Space.
4. Woodworkers and sculptors lavishly carve divine figures and mythological entities
together with geometric designs onto doors and windows as well as pillars.
