s2 Superlativos

Superlative adjectives describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group of three or more. They are typically formed by adding -est or using 'the most' for longer adjectives, with specific rules for different types of adjectives. Some adjectives are irregular and must be memorized, such as 'good' becoming 'the best' and 'bad' becoming 'the worst'.

REVISITING SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

(Genially)

1. What are Superlative Adjectives?

We use a superlative adjective to describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group
of things. We can use superlative adjectives when we are talking about three or more
things (not two things). Usually, superlative adjectives are formed by adding the suffix
-est to an adjective. Use the before the superlative form of an adjective.

2. Making Superlative Adjectives

To make a superlative adjective word, you have to change the adjective to the
superlative form.
Example:
• Hard
• Comparative: harder
• Superlative: hardest

3. Superlative adjectives rules

a. Rule 1: With regular one syllable adjectives, we add -est to make the
superlative form. Example: cheap, cheaper, the cheapest. This pen drive is
the cheapest. It costs $1.
b. Rule 2: With regular one and two syllable adjectives that end in y, we
remove the y and add -iest to make the superlative form. Example: easy,
easier, the easiest. Social media is the easiest way to communicate in the
world.
c. Rule 3: If the adjective ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC)
pattern, double the final consonant and add -est. Example: big, bigger, the
biggest. The biggest benefit of using alternative energy is that it's a safer
option for people and the planet.
d. Rule 4: With two-syllable adjectives that don't end in -y, and all three (or
more)-syllable adjectives, we add the most before the adjective. Example:
stressful, more stressful, the most stressful. Having too much homework
could be the most stressful issue on students.

4. Irregular superlative adjectives

• Irregular Adjectives don’t follow these rules. So, you must memorize them:
• Good, better, the best
• Bad, worse, the worst
• Far, further, the furthest
• Much, more, the most
• Many, more, the most
• Example: 2020 was the worst year ever.
• Example: UTP is the best university of Peru.
