Figure 1 shows a steel beam with length 1 m (The modulus of elasticity is E = 210GPa).
The beam is fixed at A. The joint at B is designed such that the joint can move up and
down, but it cannot rotate. Furthermore, the joint B is supported by a translational spring
in the vertical direction.
(a) Compute the stiffness coefficient associated with the vertical displacement at
joint B. [Ans: 7.544  108 N/m]

(b) Compute the vertical deflection at B produced by a vertical load P = 200 kN


acting downward at B. [Ans: 0.2651 mm]

(c) Compute all support reactions produced by P = 200 kN. [Ans: VA = 146.98 kN,
MA = 73.49 kNm, VB = 53.02 kN].
