1. Purpose
1.1. This SOP outlines the standard procedures for opening and
closing the pharmacy, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and security.
2. Scope
2.1. This procedure applies to all pharmacy staff responsible for
opening and closing duties.
3. Responsibilities
3.1. The Designated Person(s) (DP) is responsible for ensuring
compliance with all regulatory standards and guidelines.
3.2. All staff must be familiar with and adhere to these standards and
guidelines.
4. Opening Procedures
4.1. Arriving and Preparing for Work
4.1.1. Arrival at the pharmacy should be 5 minutes before schedule
shift time but not to exceed 10 minutes before unless employee
has prior approval.
4.1.2. Clock in using the designated timekeeping system.
4.1.3. Change into scrubs/compounding shoes or designated pharmacy
attire per company policy.
4.1.4. Ensure compliance with hygiene and safety standards (e.g.,
proper handwashing).
4.2. Initial Logins and Communication
4.2.1. Check and respond to emails to review any urgent
communications or updates.
4.2.2. Pharmacists sign the logbook to confirm your arrival and
document any necessary information.
5. Environmental and Equipment Checks
5.1. Log into the Simplifi797 system and complete the required
checks:

5.1.1. Temperature monitoring for refrigerators, freezers, and storage
areas.
5.1.2. Humidity levels within the pharmacy workspace.
5.1.3. Pressure checks as required by regulations.
5.2. Ensure all equipment (computers, iPads, transmitters, etc.) is
powered on and functioning.
5.3. Verify that security systems and cameras are operational.
6. Preparing for Operations
6.1. Review pending prescriptions and prioritize workflow accordingly.
6.2. Open the pharmacy for business at the designated time.
7. Closing Procedures
7.1. Preparing for Shutdown
7.1.1. Complete all outstanding prescription verifications and ensure
orders are processed.
7.1.2. Log into the Simplifi system to record final cleaning and any
outstanding tasks.
7.1.3. Check for any remaining tasks or communications requiring
attention before closing.
7.1.4. Ensure all prescription medications are properly stored and
controlled substances are secured.
8. Logging Out and Documentation
8.1. Pharmacists: Sign the logbook to confirm completion of duties
and document any issues.
8.2. Technicians: Clock out using the designated timekeeping
system.
8.3. Log out of all computer systems and ensure sensitive information
is secured.
9. Final Security Checks

9.1. Turn off unnecessary equipment, ensuring refrigeration units
remain powered.
9.2. Secure the pharmacy inventory as required by policy.
9.3. Ensure all entry points (doors, windows) are locked and alarm
systems are activated.
9.4. Exit the pharmacy safely and verify that the premises are secure.
10. Compliance and Review
10.1. Adherence to this SOP is mandatory for all pharmacy staff.
10.2. Any deviations or incidents must be reported to the supervisor
immediately.
