AUTUMN SCHOOL PACESETTER LIFE SCIENCES GRADE 12 2024 - 5 Day

The document outlines a 10-hour curriculum for a Grade 12 Life Sciences autumn school focusing on genetics, covering topics such as gene and allele differences, monohybrid crosses, and inheritance patterns. It includes resources like a genetics manual and past examination papers, emphasizing the importance of understanding genetic terminology and practicing genetic crosses. The schedule details teacher and learner activities over five days, including homework assignments and classwork to reinforce learning objectives.

DURATION 10 Hrs FOCUS TOPIC: GENETICS- P 2 TOPIC EXAMINED FOR 48MARKS.

PAST NSC EXAMINATION PAPERS
DBE VIRTUAL WORKSHOP VIDEO
CHIEF MARKERS & DIAGNOSTIC REPORT
EMPHASIS
• Difference between gene & allele
• 2 alleles controlling a characteristic, one allele inherited from mother, other
allele inherited from the father
• In monohybrid cross- Genotype of parent before meiosis has 2 alleles for a
particular characteristic (diploid somatic cell) whilst the gametes of the parent
have 1 allele for that characteristic (haploid)
• Stress Law of dominance and Law of segregation according to examination
guidelines
• The correct format of genetic cross must be practised by all learners
• Stick to phenotype descriptions given in the question, learners should not use
their own words to describe a phenotype
• Be clear about difference in in complete dominance, complete dominance,
and codominance
• How inheritance of blood groups relates to codominance and complete
dominance
• Practice calculations based on phenotype / genotype ratios
• Confusing autosomal and sex-linked inheritance when interpreting a pedigree
