MAINTENANCE MANUAL

INTERCOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM — SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1. General
A. Description
The cockpit audio system / Intercommunications System (ICS) provides flight crew access to all
radios and onboard communications, with selection and control of volume through the ICS audio
control panel. See Figure 1.
The dual Baker audio control system (pilot / copilot) is installed in aircraft. The ICS audio control
panel and amplifier are housed within the same unit that provides an integrated audio system
capable of selection and volume control of all installed radio equipment. Selection can be made of all
communications, receive and microphone functions including onboard communications (i.e.,
passenger address, cabin and cockpit interphone).
There are two systems, a No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 1 system is for the pilot and No. 2 system is for
the copilot. The two ICS audio control panels are mounted in the cockpit on pilot and copilot upper
side consoles.
Located in pilot and copilot side consoles are ICS JACKS panels (see Figure 2). The wiring from pilot
side is routed into audio control No. 1 and wiring on copilot side is routed to audio control No. 2. Each
console has three phone jacks:
• HAND MIC
• BOOM MIC
• HEAD PHONE
An ICS intercom jack is installed in the nose wheel well and tail compartment with the necessary
wiring for communication between these stations and cockpit.
The audio control panels provide an integrated audio system capable of selection and volume control
of all installed radio equipment. Two types of pushbutton switches are used. The microphone
selection is accomplished by an interlocking switch permitting only one button to lock down at one
time. When another button in microphone selector group is depressed, the previously depressed
button is released automatically. When the button is depressed, the function engraved on the placard
has been selected. The second type is known as an alternate action or push-push switch (i.e., the
switch is on when depressed and may be released to off position by depressing again). The push-
push switch type of switch is used for all selections of receivers and other functions except
microphone selector. The audio control panels have self-contained transistor isolation and speaker
amplifier with audio leveling. The system includes use of a filter network to remove the 1020 Hz
identifier from navigation or ADF receiver if desired. Audio inputs such as COMM, NAV and DME are
normally leveled; ADF, MKR and AUX inputs are not.
In case of amplifier failure or complete power loss to system, an emergency operation mode allows
receiver selection and direct pass-through of all normal inputs to headphones and use of hand mic for
transmission purposes. In this mode, audio levels to phones will be controlled by compression levels
set within receiver units. During an EMER mode due to audio box failure or power loss, H’MIC, ICS
and PAGE functions are unavailable.
2. Details
A. Audio / Intercommunications System (ICS) Control Panel
The operating controls of the audio panel for intercommunications system are described below:
(1) EMG Switch

23-02-00
Page 1
February 28/06
MAINTENANCE MANUAL

When the EMG switch is depressed, the emergency function has been selected which permits
emergency operation of audio system, bypassing the isolation amplifier. In EMG position, pilot
may select the receivers he desires by using the audio selector switch but without isolation or
speaker operation. The headset or earphones must be used.
(2) SPK Switch
The SPK switch controls both speaker and earphone or headset audio in the selected
(depressed) position. Only headset audio is operational with the SPK switch in the released
(extended) position.
(3) ST Switch
The ST switch controls transmitter sidetone. When ST button is depressed, sidetone from
transmitters will be heard on this unit regardless of which pilot makes the transmission. When
button is released, no sidetone will be heard from transmitters.
(4) VOL Control Knob
The volume (VOL) control knob selects an audio level for all receivers feeding into audio system
and automatically maintains the selected level on all receivers with the following exception:
• ADF receivers in unfiltered position (voice and identifier) are not automatically level
controlled, nor are they affected by this volume
In filtered position (voice remaining only), ADF receivers are automatically audio level controlled
and under the control of this volume control knob. The marker receiver is not automatically level
controlled, nor regulated by this volume control, permitting pilot to detect a build or fade as he
approaches or departs from the marker.
(5) AUTO Switch
Engages the auto select feature when depressed. When selected (depressed), each receivers
AUDIO is automatically selected when receivers MICROPHONE switch is selected. When not
selected (not depressed), each receivers AUDIO and MICROPHONE switch must be selected
individually.
(6) AUDIO Switches
The NAV1, NAV2, DME1, DME2, VHF1, VHF2, VHF3, HF1, HF2, ADF1, ADF2, MKR1, MKR2,
ILS1 and ILS2 pushbutton switches select their respective receiver audio when in the
depressed position.
(7) FILT Switch
The FILT switch in the depressed position filters out or removes the 1020 cycle code identifier
signal of its associate NAV or ADF receiver leaving only the voice signal. In the released
position, identifier and voice are both heard on selected receiver.
NOTE: MICROPHONE selector switches are of the interlocking variety, permitting only one
button to remain depressed at a time and consist of the following:
• VHF1
• VHF2
• VHF3
• HF1
• HF2
• PAGE
• CABIN

(8) VHF1, VHF2, VHF3, HF1 and HF2 Switches

These switches connect both hand and mask microphone to desired transmitter for
communications.
(9) PAGE Switch
This switch connects microphones to paging system to page or make announcements on
speaker system in cabin. When this button is depressed, all audio from radio receiver to cockpit
speaker or earphones is silenced to prevent cross talk or annoying receiver audio going to
cabin.
(10) CABIN Switch
This switch connects audio system to cabin two-way hand telephone for communications with
cabin. When this button is depressed, all audio from radio receivers to cockpit speaker or
earphones is silenced to prevent cross talk to cabin or annoying receiver audio going to cabin.
(11) H’MIC Switch
This switch is a push-push type and is not interlocked with the microphone selector switches.
When this switch is depressed, pilot and copilot may communicate on their interphone system
through the boom microphone circuit without using the interphone key on wheel. The desired
transmitter may remain selected on the microphone selector button while H’MIC button remains
depressed. With the button so selected, it is only necessary to use the microphone key on the
aircraft control wheel to make a transmission. Upon releasing this key, crew interphone
operation immediately returns without further keying. With H’MIC button released, interphone
communications between pilot and copilot will only take place when the interphone button on
control wheel is depressed or keyed.
B. Hand or Mask Microphone Operation
In using a hand or mask microphone, a radio transmitter is first selected, then paging or cabin hand
telephone as desired. The hand microphone, if it is to be used, is keyed in the usual way. If pilot is
wearing the oxygen mask he may then use the microphone keying button on control wheel of aircraft
to operate mask microphone. A boom microphone may be used if desired by connecting to the boom
mic jack and using as described above.
3. Operation
A. Electrical
(1) Power Distribution
The audio control / amplifier No. 1 is powered from the 28 Vdc emergency bus via CKPT AUDIO
#1 circuit breaker. The audio control / amplifier No. 2 is powered from the 28 Vdc main bus via
CKPT AUDIO #2 circuit breaker. Both circuit breakers are located on the copilot circuit breaker
panel.
System interconnections are detailed in Figures 3, 4, 5and 6.
