Formativa 4 (Continuación 3)

The document outlines a lab report investigating the effect of fertilizer on plant growth in a greenhouse, with a focus on average height as the dependent variable. It includes a research question, hypothesis, variables, materials, and a detailed procedure for conducting the experiment. Results show that plants with fertilizer (Group A) consistently outperformed those without (Group B) in height and development over a 21-day period.

LAB REPORT (Criteria C)- FORMATIVE TASK

How does fertilizer affect plant growth in a greenhouse?

RESEARCH QUESTION: Does the use of fertilizer influence the growth (average height) of
plants grown in a greenhouse?

Hypothesis:

Variables: (You can read the procedure first, and try to fill in later)
Dependent:
Independent:

Controlled (Choose and explain two of each):

Materials:

- 10 identical pots.
- Seeds of the same plant (example: basil).
- Substrate or homogeneous soil.
- Fertilizer (follow the manufacturer's instructions).
- Ruler or measuring tape.
- Water, permanent marker to label the pots.

Procedure (steps):

1. Fill all 10 pots with the same amount of soil.

2. Plant 3 seeds in each pot to ensure that at least one germinates.
3. Divide the pots into 2 groups:
Group A: With fertilizer.
Group B: Without fertilizer.
4. Water all pots with the same amount of water (50 mL every other day).
5. Add fertilizer to Group A according to the product instructions (for example, once a
week).
6. Place all pots in a greenhouse or under controlled light and temperature
conditions.
7. Measure the height of the plants every 3 days with a ruler, recording the data in a
table.

(Take in care all security instructions in the fertilizer bottle)

 The results for Plant Growth Data were as follows:

 Day 0:
Group A: 0 cm (freshly planted seeds).
Group B: 0 cm (freshly planted seeds).

 Day 3:
Group A: 1.5 cm (first visible shoots).
Group B: 1.2 cm (first visible shoots).

 Day 6:
Group A: 3.8 cm (small leaves, thin stems).
Group B: 3.0 cm (small leaves, thin stems).

 Day 9:
Group A: 6.5 cm (thicker stems).
Group B: 5.2 cm (thinner stems).

 Day 12:
Group A: 9.8 cm (more visible leaves).
Group B: 7.0 cm (less visible leaves).

 Day 15:
Group A: 13.0 cm (noticeable difference in size).
Group B: 9.5 cm (slower growth).

 Day 18:
Group A: 16.5 cm (greener and larger leaves).
Group B: 12.0 cm (less developed leaves).

 Day 21:
Group A: 20.0 cm (flowering plants).
Group B: 14.5 cm (no signs of flowering).

Interpretation of the results of your investigation:

1. Put the data obtained in organized tables, showing the heading with magnitude and
correct units:

Day Group A Group B Qualitative data

---------- -----------
--------- ----------

2. Bar chart (present the results, both groups): X, independent variable. Y,

dependent variable.
3. Highlight the differences between the two groups.

Questions to Guide the Analysis (criteria C):

1. What differences did you observe in growth between the two groups?
2. On what day did a significant difference between the two groups begin to be
noticed?

3. What factors could explain the results obtained?

4. Does the evidence support the hypothesis? Explain why.

Hypothesis: If plants receive fertilizer, then they will grow faster and be taller on average
than plants that do not receive it, because the fertilizer provides additional nutrients
essential for their development.

5. Reflect on the importance of fertilizer in plant growth.

6. Identify possible sources of error in the experiment (e.g., variation in light,

differences in germination).

7. Describe some improvement or extension of the method that would benefit

scientific research.
