3-Band-Eq Datasheet

The 3-band Active Equalizer is designed for use in guitars or basses, featuring three EQ controls and a LEVEL control, with low power consumption ideal for battery operation. It utilizes specific components like LM324N and LM258P for efficiency, and includes formulas for calculating Q factor and frequency. The datasheet also provides a list of required parts and suggests potentiometer specifications for optimal performance.

3-band Active Equalizer

datasheet version 260416

www.op-electronics.com

The 3-band EQ is an active equalization circuit meant to be used inside guitar or bass, as a standalone unit or to add
equalization to an existing effect. It features 3 EQ controls and 1 LEVEL control.

SUPPLY
By using low-power IC like LM324N and LM258P the board will absorb just 1.6mA which will give approximately
340 hours autonomy which is ideal for battery operation. The board can be powered by a standard 9V DC power
supply too of course. For power supply operation it's suggested to replace C2 with a 10uF electrolytic capacitor:

Electrolytic Cap
positive terminal (only
for external power
supply operation)

For external power supply operation TL074 and TL072 are suggested for best performance.

POTENTIOMETERS
Use linear 10K or 20K, best if they are center tapped so you know when the frequency is flat. Same holds for
LEVEL.

Q factor and Frequency

You can use the following formula to calculate your own Q and frequency:

f = 1/6,28 * √L*Ca

where L is:

L=Cb * Ra * Rb

Q is given by:

Q=√(Cb*Rb)/(Ca*Ra)
Q Parameter

Q is essentially the shape of the filter and it describes how much bandwidth around the center frequency the filter will
cut or boost. It's expressed as a number greater than zero, the lower the Q and wider the bandwidth of the filter, the
higher the Q and narrower the bandwidth it will affect.

Usually a low Q results in a more a natural sound while high Q is used for enhance or reject a particular frequency.

Here's a graphical example of 4 Q curves depicted on the frequency spectrum:

The center frequency for all the 4 curves is the same at 100 Hz boosting +15dB but their Q is different:

RED = 0.71
GREEN = 1.41
BLUE = 2.82
PURPLE = 5.64

As you can see the RED curve will boost +5dB at 40 Hz while the purple curve at 40 Hz is almost flat.
