CHANGING YOUR addresses a broad spectrum of topics that begins with a focus on change as it relates to be-
THOUGHTS coming a college student in a different culture and setting than you may have known before.
In this section, you will be introduced to tools of self-management as they relate to your
academic success. You will be exposed to a variety of new terms, ideas, and thoughts—all
of which begin your journey of change. You will learn to enhance your communication skills,
improve your self-concept, and manage conflict, all valuable tools on the road to change. You
will become more adept at critical thinking and problem solving. When you have mastered
these areas, you should notice a difference in the way you approach tasks and think about
subjects, challenges, and people.
CHANGING YOUR focuses on you and how you physically and mentally manage yourself. You will begin this
PERFORMANCE part of the journey to change by learning to manage your time while controlling the inher-
ent stress that accompanies being a student. You will realize that you have a dominant intel-
ligence, learning style, and personality type, and learn how to use them to your advantage.
Even though you have been reading for some time, you will be shown strategies to improve
both your speed and comprehension because reading is a major part of your studies. You will
be shown several note-taking systems designed to improve your ability to record what your
instructors are teaching. Finally, you will be taught strategies for empowering your memory,
learning to study more effectively, and taking tests with confidence. When you master these
areas, you should be able to perform most tasks more effectively and confidently.
CHANGING YOUR is designed to round out your total personal profile and springboard you to success as you
LIFE move into a different realm. To be a completely successful student, you need to address all
these areas because they are significant to the changes you need to embrace. You will learn to
manage your money and your debts wisely. So many students are burdened with astronomical
financial debts when they graduate; our desire is for you to have accumulated as little debt
as possible, while at the same time taking advantage of all that your college has to offer. On
this important journey to change, you will learn how to immerse yourself in many categories
of diversity while you celebrate all kinds of people. You will be taught to be responsible for
your own wellness and how to exercise personal responsibility. Finally, you will be introduced

nukkuivat syvässä unessa akkunain alla kooten voimia huomispäivän
ponnistuksiin. Talonväki oli jo vaipunut uneen parin pienen lapsen
kanssa, jotka silloin-tällöin yskähtelivät hinkuyskässä, mikä kai oli
kulkenut Suomesta, mutta me toverini kanssa emme nukkuneet
sikeästi. Vieretysten maaten saatoimme me kuulla, kuinka toinen
nuorista naisista unissaan puheli "heinän juontamisesta", joka heillä
oli ollut huolena maatamennessä. Heinänjuonnanta, kuten
kansankieli sitä aina nimittää, on kevätpakkasöinä hyvin tavallinen
painajainen joka talossa Raja-Karjalassa. Heinä on tehty
sydänmaihin ja jätetty hankikelin varaan sellaisiin paikkoihin, joihin ei
pääse hevosella. Kylminä aamuöinä vedetään ne kelkalla tai reellä
lähimmälle ajotielle, josta sitten hevosella voi vetää kotiin. Tätä
perävetoa, jonka useimmiten naiset toimittavat, niityltä talvitielle,
nimitetään juontamiseksi. Niin kului tähtikirkas yö näitä karjalaisoloja
miettiessä, mutta juuri kun mekin vihdoin olimme
nukahtamaisillamme, kuulimme kuinka miniä ja tytär hiljaa nousivat
ylös, pukeutuivat kiireesti pimeässä ja poistuivat ulos ovesta hiukan
kolistaen rautapohjaisia saappaitaan. Sinne ne kanat katosivat —
varmaankin toivossa että ehtisivät takaisin heinänjuonnasta meidän
aamulähtöömme…

Hän oli pitkän roteva mies tämä pappi, mutta silmien ilme ja
kasvojen uurteet ilmaisivat ilotonta elämänhautomusta, jotakin
väsymykseen ja epätoivoiseen neuvottomuuteen raukenevaa.
Keskustellessa hänen kasvonsa ikäänkuin ponnistellen vilkastuivat ja
silmissä kimalsi jokin suvaitsevainen sävy. Jättiläisruumiiset miehet,
kuten tunnettu, ovat tavallisesti luonteeltaan hyvänsuopeita. Pappi
puheli mieluusti karjalaa, mutta vaikeata oli oudon hänen puhettaan
ymmärtää ja sentähden oli pakko tuontuostakin turvautua venäjään.
Hänen vaimonsa oli liukaskielinen uhtuatar, joka myös oli oppinut
venäjänkielen, mutta karjalaksi hän sentään omia karjalaisveljiään ja
sisariaan arvosteli, heti ilmoittaen vierailleen että latvajärveläiset
hänen mielestään olivat mailman muka huonointa kansaa. Pelkäänpä
että paikkakuntalaisten arvostelu maatushkastaan ei ollut yhtään
loistavampi! Mitä kylvää, sen niittää. Lapsia ei talossa näkynyt ja
pappi lausuikin mielihyvänsä ettei Jumala niitä ollut lähettänyt tänne
erämaan kurjuuteen. Sillä kurjana hän piti virkaansa Latvajärvellä,
vaikka ei seurakuntalaisistaan lausunut pahoja sanoja. Hänen
sieluaan painosti alituinen ikävä, venäläinen skuuka, jollei juuri itse
raskasmielisyyden huippu, "splin". Kohtalo oli hänet ikäänkuin
kironnut latvajärveläiseksi papiksi, joka oikeastaan ei tietänyt eikä
tarvinnutkaan tietää, mitä varten keisarikunnassa oli olemassa
sellaisia sopukoita kuin Ladv-oozero. Kivijärvikin oli hiukkasen
parempi, mutta Latvajärvi oli — papiston Siperia. Ei mikään
kannattanut! Täytyi olla olemassa ja tehdä tehtävänsä, mutta
oikeastaan sieti antaa kaikelle palttua ja piiloutua kuin jänis
pensaaseen. Ei kannattanut tehdä muuta työtä kuin suorittaa
virkavelvollisuutensa. Ei kannattanut harrastaa maanviljelystä eikä
karjanhoitoa — eikös Latvajärvi ollut vain yhtä rämettä? ja yksikin
lehmä vaati heinää, sentähden ei pidetty kuin kesällä lehmää. Ei
kannattanut tarkemmin tutustua kansaan, ei kannattanut matkustaa
Suomen rajan yli olosuhteita utelemaan — miksi? mitä varten?
Hänhän oli: Latvajärven pappi — oliko mailmassa kuultu että siinä
asemassa voisi olla mitään viehättävää? Yhden ainoan kerran hän oli
matkustanut Suomen rajan yli, mutta kääntynyt takaisin
Hyrynsalmelta, missä luterilaisella kirkkoherralla oli ollut lafka, jossa
ei oltu penniäkään helpoitettu, kun hän oli yrittänyt ostaa lasiruutuja
uutta koulua varten! Suomi? — tietysti toiset olosuhteet, mutta mitä
se häneen kuului? Hän on Latvajärvellä ja kuivettuu tänne vuodesta
vuoteen kuin kapahauki pirtin seinään — täällä ei kannata keksiä
parannuksia ei asumuksissa eikä muussa — ymmärtämätön kansa,
typerä kansa, hospodi. On vain olemassa, murjottelee ristissä-käsin
— vot tebje na: kyllä hän kesällä onkii ahvenia Ladv-oozerosta —
kotirannassa kököttää. Mutta skuuka vetshnaja, ikuinen ikävä! Täältä
ei piispa päästä pois ilman päteviä syitä. Istu ja pala. Täällä kärsit,
tänne kuoletkin — Ladv-oozeroon!

— Shto takoje?
Hän katsoi minuun neuvottomasti. Selitin että Kalevala oli muuan
merkillinen kirja, jonka sisältö oli osaksi kerätty juuri täältä
Latvajärveltä. Mainitsin että Kalevala myös oli käännetty
venäjänkieleen.
— Tshitival!

Matkakertomukseemme ei enää ole muuta lisättävää kuin että
7:ntenä päivänä huhtikuuta Saukon ja Haukilan talojen kautta
vaivoin pääsimme perille, viimeisellä peninkulmalla kiskoen poroja
perässämme, eivätkä ne sittenkään perille asti jaksaneet, vaan
toinen täytyi jättää naavametsään voimistumaan. Virvoittavan
vaikutuksen meihin kaikissa tapauksissa oli tehnyt tämä viikkoinen
kiertomatka, jota oli karttunut lähes 20 peninkulmaa. Tekisi mieli
sanoa muillekkin: mene ja tee samoin, taikka: koetelkaat kaikki ja
pitäkää se kuin hyvä on.
Vapunpäivä korvessa.
Järven jää, ulappa uljas… hop hop ja hei hei! riipase nyt rikeneen,
oi luomus Jumalan! Ilahduta takatalvista mieltäni, riemastuta
yksinäistä sydäntäni sydänmailla! Näin on hyvä, näinpä hyvä olla ja
eleä. Täys laukka siis! Tierat sinkoilevat silmilleni, iskevät iloisesti
ylioppilaslakkani kultaista lyyryä vasten ja solahtavat sulaen turkkini
avoimeen kaulukseen. Hauskaa vappua!

Toverini muistutti nyt minulle että tässä mökissä sitä viime talvena
oli tapella nujuttu oikein aikatavasta niin että muuan miekkonen
makasi pitkät viikot henkihieverinä, vaan kun siitä toipui, niin heti
lipetti Amerikkaan pakoon esivallan kouraa, koska näet oli
salapolttimon viinoja juotu. Ja sentähden tässä on uudet asukkaat…
