Welcome to the Western Cape and Cape Town!
The province of the Western Cape is situated in the most southerly corner of Africa. Both the Atlantic
and Indian Oceans border its coastal zone. The diversity of the scenery is quite unique, from the flat
semi-desert plains of the Karoo, to the breathtaking mountain ranges with their most unusual folding
and geological structures, unlike anywhere else in the world.
Cape Town, more commonly known as “the Mother City” is made up of graceful historic buildings, a
wealth of tradition, fresh seafood, fine wines and many fascinating shops. Cape Town grew around
the original site of the first European settlement of Southern Africa, which was started in April 1652,
when Jan van Riebeck and his small party landed on the shores beneath Table Mountain. Their
mission was to establish a refreshment station for the ships of the Dutch East India Company, which
were sailing between Europe and the Spice Islands of the East. A permanent settlement soon sprang
up around the station.
Transfer to Cool Runnings Toboggan Park for some fun on Africa’s first downhill tobogganing track.
1530 Expected time of arrival at Cool Runnings Toboggan Park. 4 x toboggan rides per person have been
pre-paid in full and you will find the voucher in Mrs Marx’s travel wallet.

Go hurtling down a half-pipe in a bobsled, flying through the twists and curves as you race along the
1.25 km track. It’s fun, it’s fast, and it’s safe! The first downhill tobogganing track in Africa, Cool
Runnings is a Cape Town-based family park boasting an intricate course of steel tracks and top-
notch, wheeled bobsleds. It’s fun for kids and adults and the combination of speed and skill makes it
a thrilling challenge for even the most die-hard speed freak. Starting at the foot Durbanville’s slopes,
you settle into your toboggan and set off as the cables in the tracks haul you to the start of the
course (a relief for anyone thinking they’d have to climb the hill every time!). Once at the top, it’s just
you, the toboggan, the brake lever – and the spectacular view of Cape Town. Cruise through the 17
corners, S-bends and even a tunnel, before the sled automatically slows down at the bottom of the
course, safe and sound.
After a fun session at the park, meet the coach and transfer to the Never@Home Hostel and check
in.

The history of Veldskoen Shoes is as rich and diverse as the country they come from. There are
various groups of people who believe the Veldskoen, or a version of it, started with them. The word
"Veldskoen" was first documented by the Dutch settlers who arrived in Southern Africa almost 400
years ago. It means "field shoes." However, according to Khoisan tribal folklore, there were leather
shoes, cut from a single hide, being made and worn by the tribe, as far back as 1000 years before
that.

Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa's Western Cape province. It's surrounded by the
vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and
Simonsberg. The town's oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries. Cape
Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa's Dutch colonial history, as do the Village Museum's
period houses and gardens.
Stellenbosch University (SU) was officially established on 2 April 1918 with the adoption of ‘De
Universiteit van Stellenbosch-wet’ (Act 13 of 1916). Therefore, 2018 marked the year that SU
celebrated 100 years as a fully-fledged university. Starting out with four faculties: Arts, Science,
Education and Agriculture (currently Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Education and AgriSciences),
503 students and 40 lecturing staff on 2 April 1918, SU today is home to 10 faculties, a vibrant and
cosmopolitan community of more than 35 000 students and 3 500 staff members, spread over five
campuses.
