Culvert Design: Manual Hydraulic
Discharge Calculation
1. Introduction: Existing Culvert Dimensions and Manual Calculation
The existing culvert upstream of the stream, located near Ndungu Primary School, has the
following dimensions:
- Width (W) = 1.5 m
- Height (H) = 1.0 m
- Wall thickness = 0.2 m
- Top and bottom slab thickness = 0.2 m
- Foundation thickness = 0.2 m
These dimensions are used as a reference for the manual calculations, and we will calculate
the discharge using Manning's formula to determine whether the existing culvert is
adequate to handle the flow at the location.
2. Manning's Formula for Discharge Calculation
Manning's formula is used to calculate the discharge (Q) for the culvert:
Q = (1/n) × A × R^(2/3) × S^(1/2)
Where:
- n = Manning’s roughness coefficient (0.013 for concrete)
- A = Cross-sectional area of flow
- P = Wetted perimeter
- R = Hydraulic radius = A / P
- S = Channel slope (0.025 assumed)
3. Manual Calculation for the Existing Culvert
Step 1: Calculate the Area (A)
A = W × H = 1.5 m × 1.0 m = 1.5 m²
Step 2: Calculate the Wetted Perimeter (P)
P = W + 2H = 1.5 m + 2 × 1.0 m = 3.5 m
Step 3: Calculate the Hydraulic Radius (R)
R = A / P = 1.5 / 3.5 = 0.429 m
Step 4: Apply Manning's Formula
Q = (1/0.013) × 1.5 × (0.429)^(2/3) × (0.025)^(1/2)
R^(2/3) ≈ 0.568, S^(1/2) = 0.158
Q = (1/0.013) × 1.5 × 0.568 × 0.158 ≈ 10.37 m³/s
Conclusion: The discharge for the existing culvert is approximately 10.37 m³/s.
