Assignment 5

The document is an assignment for Class XI Physics focusing on motion in a straight line, covering kinematic equations and motion under gravity. It includes various problems related to motion, such as calculating retardation, analyzing point objects, and determining distances and velocities in different scenarios. Additionally, it features higher-order thinking questions (HOTS) that challenge students to apply their understanding of the concepts.

CLASS XI SUBJECT: PHYSICS SESSION 2023-24

ASSIGNMENT- 5 TOPIC: Motion in a Straight Line SUB TOPIC: : Kinematic
Equations & Motion
Under Gravity.

1. A car moving along a straight highway with speed of 126 kmh–1 is brought to a stop within a distance of
200 m. What is the retardation of the car (assumed uniform), and how long does it take for the car to
stop?

2. In which of the following examples of motion, can the body be considered approximately a point object:
(a) a railway carriage moving without jerks between two stations.
(b) a monkey sitting on top of a man cycling smoothly on a circular track.
(c) a spinning cricket ball that turns sharply on hitting the ground.
(d) a tumbling beaker that has slipped off the edge of a table.

3. A ball is released from the top of a tower of height h metres. It takes T seconds to reach the ground.
What is the position of the ball in T/3 seconds?

4. The reaction time for an automobile driver is 0.6 s. If the automobile can be decelerated at 5 ms-2,
calculate the total distance travelled in coming to stop from an initial velocity of 30 kmh–1, after a signal
is observed.

5. A bullet fired into a fixed target loses half of its velocity after penetrating 3 cm. How much further will
it penetrate before coming to rest assuming that it faces constant resistance to motion?

6. A car, starting from rest, accelerates at the rate f through a distance ‘s’, then continues at constant speed
for some time ‘t’ and then decelerates at the rate 𝑓⁄2 to come to rest. If the total distance is ‘5 s’, then
1
prove that 𝑠 = 2 𝑓𝑡 2 .

7. (a) Can a body have zero velocity and still be accelerating? Explain.
(b) Under what condition is the average velocity equal to the instantaneous velocity?
(c) Two balls of different masses (one lighter and one heavier) are thrown vertically upward with same
initial speed. Which one will rise to greater height? Justify your answer.

8. A stone thrown upwards from the top of a tower 85 m high, reaches the ground in 5 s.
Find (i) the greatest height above the ground, (ii) the velocity with which it reaches the ground and (iii)
the time taken to reach the maximum height. Take g = 10 ms-2.

9. A bullet travelling with a velocity of 16 m/s penetrates a tree trunk and comes to rest in 0.4 m. Find the
time taken during the retardation.

10. From a tower of height H, a particle is thrown vertically upwards with a speed u. The time taken by the
particle, to hit the ground, is n times that taken by it to reach the highest point of its path. Find the
relation between H, u and n.

11. HOTS: A police inspector in a jeep is chasing a pickpocket on a straight road. The jeep is going at its
maximum speed v (assumed uniform motion). The pickpocket rides on the motorcycle of a waiting
friend when the jeep is at a distance d away, and the motorcycle starts with constant acceleration a.
Show that the pickpocket will be caught if 𝑣 ≥ √2𝑎𝑑 .
12. HOTS: A stone is dropped from a balloon going up with a uniform velocity of 5.0 m/s. If the balloon
was 50 m high when the stone was dropped, find its height when the stone hits the ground. Take g = 10
ms-2.
