LESSON 4

ENGR. DONN PEDRO T. PANGANIBAN

CVIL 1012 || CIVIL ENGINEERING

DEPARTMENT
UNIVERSITY OF SAINT LOUIS TUGUEGARAO
Learning outcomes:
 Explain why unit conversions are necessary in real-world
contexts, such as science, engineering, and daily life.
 Identify and categorize basic units of measurement in
different systems.
 Perform conversions within the same measurement
system, such as converting meters to centimeters or
pounds to ounces.
 Accurately convert between metric and customary units
using conversion factors.

Why is unit conversion important?
 Consistency: Different fields and regions use various measurement systems
(e.g., metric vs. imperial). Converting units ensures that measurements are
consistent and comparable.
 Accuracy: In scientific and technical contexts, precise measurements are
crucial. Converting units correctly helps avoid errors that can lead to incorrect
conclusions or unsafe situations.
 Communication: When sharing data or collaborating with others, using a
common unit of measurement facilitates clear communication and
understanding.
 Problem Solving: Many mathematical and scientific problems require
calculations that involve different units. Converting units allows you to perform
these calculations accurately.
 Interdisciplinary Work: Fields such as engineering, medicine, and finance
often require integration of data from various sources that may use different
units. Converting units is essential for effective analysis and application.
