Pickup value of differential current (I-DIFF>):

The current sensitivity is set with address 1210 I-DIFF>. It is determined by the entire current flowing into a protected zone in case of a fault. Thi
regardless of how it is distributed between the ends of the protected object.

Considering the variations of voltage and frequency, the set value should be at least 2 to 3 times higher than the calculated charging current. More
should not be less than 15% of the rated operational current. The rated operational current derive from the addresses 1104 FullScaleCurr.

If no voltages are measured, the compensated charging current is taken into account in address 1224 IcSTAB/IcN. This ratio is normally 2.5, so th
to 3 times, or IcSTAB/IcN · I-DIFF>, of the determined charging current.

Our recommendation is that differential current setting should be more than Differential Current contribution by Line Charging Current plus Diffe
contribution by phase shift. The charging current compensation in address 1221 is switched Ic-comp. = ON

4.2- Pickup setting during Switch-on(1213 I-DIFF>SWITCH ON):

When switching on long, unloaded cables, overhead lines and arc-compensated lines, pronounced higher-frequency transient reactions may take p
considerably damped by means of a digital filter in the differential protection. A pickup value I-DIF>SWITCH ON (address 1213) can be set to re
sided pickup of the protection. This pickup value is always active when a device has recognized the connection of a dead line at its end. For the du
SI Time all Cl. which was set in the general protection data at address 1132 all devices are then switched over to this particular pickup value. A se
steady-state charging current ensures usually the stability of the protection during switch-on of the line.

I-DIFF>SWITCH ON =
I-DIFF>SWITCH ON =

4.3- Pickup setting Charge Comparison Stage(1233 I-DIFF>>)

The pickup threshold of the charge comparison stage is set in address 1233 I-DIFF>>. The RMS value of the current is decisive. The conversion i
out by the device itself. Setting near the operational nominal current is adequate in most cases. Please also remember that the setting is related to t
values that must be equal (primary) at all ends of the protected object.

I-DIFF>> =

4.4- Pickup value when switching on the charge comparison (I-DIF>> SWITCHON)
If bushing transformers are used for a transformer in the protected line section, stray fluxes through the bushing transformers may occur when rec
fault. These stray fluxes may cause a distortion of the secondary current and an over-function of the charge comparison.
If bushing transformers are used, the setting value of parameter 1235 I-DIF>>SWITCHON should be 2 to 3 times the setting value of I-DIFF>>. T
DIF>>SWITCHON corresponds to the default setting of parameter 1233 I-DIFF>>. In the default setting, this parameter is therefore ineffective.

Resistance of CT lead wires: (as per TES-P-119.28 cl: 5.7.3)

The effective wire burden will be calculated for a two wire connection of CT and relay according to length,
cross-section, copper resistivity and secondary nominal current:

RL = R20 . L. [1 + α(T-20)]
where
RL = Lead wire resistance
R20 = CT lead resistance per unit length
L = total length of the CT lead wires
α = Temperature coefficient of Resistance of copper conductor at inferred absolute
zero of temperature ( α = 1/234.5)
T = Final temperature of the wire (T=75 oC)

Thus
Area of Cross Section, A = 6 mm2
CT lead resistance per unit length = 0.00308 Ω/m (as per Table 2.0 in TES-P-119.28)
Temperature Coefficient of Copper, α = 0.00426439232409

Distance (120 % of 2 way): 400.00 mtr

(Approx.)
Total CT Cable Resistance ( Two Way )
2Rl = R20 . L. [1 + α(T-20)]
= 0.00308x400[1+0.004(75-20) ]
= 1.50304
2Rl = 1.503 ohms
Ual Calculation formula
As per manufacturer:

The CT Accuracy Limiting Voltage (Ual) shall meet the following requirements.

A) Ual1 = 4 * If * ( Rct + 2Rl ) -1

Ual1 = Accuracy Limit Voltage for Stub Differential Protection

If = Maximum Secondary Through Fault current Level
Rct = CT secondary winding resistance at 75oC
Rl = Cable lead resistance (Both ways total) at 75oC

Maximum Fault Current:

100 x Tr. Full load current

Maximum through fault current =
Tr.% Impedance

Transformer % imp at 1.5 MVA = Tr. % Imp. at given base MVA x New Base MVA
Given base MVA

The offered CT Im = 50 mA
Ip = T * (Ir + nIm + IM+Isup)
Ir = 0.10 A
Total Im for 4 CTs = x 50ma
nIm = 0.00000 A
IM at Vs = 0.52*(sqrt(2)*Vi / C)1/b
= 0.52 x (SQRT(2) x 111/ 450)^4

Supervision relay current = 0.001
Ip = T * (Ir + nIm + IM+Isup)
= 5000 x (0.1 + 0 + 0.0077003+0.001)

The primary fault sensitivity is only 10% of the CT rating and the CT magnetising current has less effect on the primary fault sensitivity.

Metrosil non-linear resistor requirement :

Vp = 2 Sqrt(2Ual(Vf-Ual))
Vf = I'f (Rct + 2RL + Rst + Rr)
Vp = peak voltage developed by the CT under internal fault conditions
Ual = current transformer knee-point voltage
Vf = maximum voltage that would be produced if CT saturation did not occur
Vs',Vc = Minimum required stability voltage
I'f = maximum internal secondary fault current
Rsr = Series resistor setting value
Rct = current transformer secondary winding resistance
RL = maximum lead burden from current transformer to relay
Rst = relay stabilising resistor
Rr = Relay ohmic impedance at setting

Vf = 9.62252*(10+1.50304+1200+0.05)
= 11658.2

Vp = 2 x(SQRT(2)(2 x 500*(11658.2-500))
= 6680.78

Since the calculation Vp is more than 2kV, so below metrosil type is proposed.

If = maximum secondary external fault current
K = a constant affected by the dynamic response of the relay

CT Magnetising Current

Imag at US= (Imag at Vk X VKP)/Vk
Total CT Magnetising Current(for 15 nos. CT's)
= (15 x 0.0064) 0.0960 A
T.Imag = 15 X Imag at US
As per metrosil sizing, metrosil is not required.

Therefore, Ires = 0.0000 A

Supervision Relay current at max. setting = 0.25 mA

Min Primary Operating Current Iop= N X (Ir + Ires + T.Imag+Isup) = (3600/1) x (0.1 + 0 + 0.096 + 0.0002) 706.5 A

The primary fault sensitivity is 19.62% of the CT rating at setting voltage, i.e., in between 10-20% of the CT rated current, therefore, the calculated setting is acceptable.

7 Calculation for shunt resistor Requirement

As per SEC requirement the primary operating current should be less than 120% of the full load current at setting voltage. Therefore, to increase the primary operating current
to 120% of the full load current, a variable shunt resistor shall be used.
The primary pickup current should be such that with opening of one of the CT connected with connection protection and loading of that feeder equal to the CT rated current
i.e.4000 A. (approx. 120% F.L. current) should not cause tripping of the connection
protection.
