MATH 14 – ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS
ACTIVITY NO. 3
REGRESSION ANALYSIS
Direction. For each problem, draw the scatter plot graph, find the equation of the regression line
and find the y value for the specified x value. Remember that no regression should be done when
r is not significant. Plot the regression line on the scatter plot, if appropriate. Summarize the results.
Box your answers. This problem set is worth 50 points. Write your solutions in a DAFE booklet.
1. For a random selection of drivers, their ages and the number of automobile accidents that
they had over a 3-year period are shown.
Age 21 22 40 35 41 50 28 25
Accidents 5 6 1 2 3 0 4 4
Find when = 30 years old.
2. The data show the final exam grades for 16 randomly selected students taking both College
Algebra and Statistics. Use the College Algebra scores for the independent variable and
Statistics scores for the dependent variable. Test the hypotheses at = 0.05. Use Table A–8.
Student 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
College Algebra 88 97 73 92 81 79 71 90
Statistics 86 95 78 97 87 81 75 85
Student 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16
College Algebra 86 58 87 68 74 86 62 95
Statistics 90 70 85 77 76 81 65 89
Find when = 80.
3. New movie releases per studio and gross receipts are as follows:
No. of releases 361 270 306 22 35 10 8 12 21
Gross receipts
3844 1962 1371 1064 334 241 188 154 125
(million $)
Find when = 200 new releases.
4. These data were obtained for the years 2009 through 2014 and indicate the number of
fireworks (in millions) used and the related injuries. Predict the number of injuries if 100 million
fireworks are used during a given year.
Fireworks in use, 213.9 205.9 234.1 207.5 186.4 225.3
Related injuries, 8800 8600 9600 8600 11400 10500
5. An educator wants to see how the number of absences for a student in her class affects the
student’s final grade. The data obtained from a sample are shown.
No. of absences, 10 12 2 0 8 5
Final grade, 70 65 96 94 75 82
