AC Example1& Ass 1

The document outlines calculations for an air conditioning system maintaining specific indoor conditions while accounting for external temperatures and humidity. It includes the determination of sensible and latent heat, air flow rates, and conditions at various points in the system using a psychrometric chart. Additionally, it presents a similar assignment for an air-conditioned restaurant with different parameters.

Example 1

An Air Conditioned Space is to be maintained at 24oC dbt and 50% RH when

the outside conditions are 40oC dbt and 24oC wbt. The Calculated total
Sensible heat for the required A/C unit is 216000 BTU/hr while its Latent
heat is 24000 BTU/hr. The fresh air ratio is 20% of the total air and the
cooling coil BPF is 0.1, Calculate:-

1- Represent the cycle on the Psychrometric chart.

2- The Space Supply air conditions.
3- The cooling unit entering air conditions
4- The unit cooling capacity in T.R.
5- The unit total air flow rate in CFM.

Solution
Qs = 216000 BTU/hr
Ql = 24000 BTU/hr
F/A Ratio = 20%

m2 = 0.8m m3 =0.2m
m4 = m2 + m3 = 0.8m + 0.2m = m

From Psychrometric Chart

W3 0.123 kgv /kga W2 =0.094 kgv /kga

Mixing of two air streams

W4 = = 0.0998 kgv /kga

T4 (dbt)=28oC h4 = 54 kJ/kg

T4 (wbt)=19oC RH4 = 42.22%

Machine SHF = = = = 0.9 draw parallel line.

From Chart
ts = 13.8 oC

BPF =

0.1 = t1 = 15.22 oC dbt

h 1 = 44 kJ/kg t1 =14.5 oC (wbt)

w1 = 0.1 kgv /kga (RH)1 = 90%

2- The space supply air conditions (Point 1)

T1 = 15.22 oC dbt T1 = 14.5 oC wbt
h 1 = 44 kJ/kg w1 = 0.1 kgv /kga
(RH)1 = 90%

3- Cooling coil entering air conditions (point4)

T4 = 28oC dbt T4 = 19 oC wbt
h 4 = 54 kJ/kg w4 = 0.0998 kgv /kga
(RH)4 = 42.22%

4- Unit cooling capacity = Qs + Ql = 216000 + 24000 = 240000 BTU/hr

1T.R = 12000 BTU/hr

Unit cooling capacity = = 20 T.R

5- Unit total air flow rate in CFM

1F = 32 + (9/5)x oC
t4 = 32 + (9/5) x 28 = 82.4 F (dbt)
t1 = 32 + (9/5) x 15.22 = 59.4 F (dbt)
t1 = 32 + (9/5) x 14.5 = 58.1 F (wbt)
Qs = 1.08 x CFM x (t4 – t1) (British)
216000 = 1.08 x CFM x (82.4 – 59.4)

Air Flow rate = = 8696 CFM

For coversion to m3/hr, multiply each CFM by 1.7

Air Flow rate = 1.7 x 8696 = 14783 m3/hr
Assignment (1)

An Air Conditioned Restaurant is to be maintained at 22oC dbt and 50%

RH when the outside conditions are 38oC dbt and 22oC wbt. The
Calculated total Sensible heat for the required A/C unit is 183600 BTU/hr
while its Latent heat is 32400 BTU/hr. The fresh air ratio is 25% of the
total air and the cooling coil BPF is 0.12, Calculate:-

1- Represent the cycle on the Psychrometric chart.

2- The Space Supply air conditions.
3- The cooling unit entering air conditions
4- The unit cooling capacity in T.R.
5- The unit total air flow rate in m3/hr.
