M 4 Medium Tank with l05mm. Howitzer - L944'

Scale I :?6 (4mm. to I {oot). Drawn by D. P. Dyer
BELLONA PRINTS SERIES 5, No.l8a
M 4 Medium Tank with l05mm.Howitzer
Although the British and American armies never went into production with Bpecialiged aaaault
guns on the lines of the German and Rusaian vehiclee of thie type, various tanks had howitzer8
fitted in place of the standard armament and were used as cloee support vehicles, going for-
ward with the leading infantry in order to demolieh pillboxes and the like. The normal type of
seU propelled howitzer wa6 not very suitable for thie particular role, due to the vulnerability
of the open superstructure.
In view of the anticipated demand for a cloae support tank when the invasion of Europe began,
it was decided to utilise part o{ the M4 Sherman ploduction facility for this purpose.
Accordingly, atthebegimingof lÿ44 whenproductionof theoriginalM4withT5mm. gunwae
terminating, the Detroit Tank Arsenal was switched to building this veraion armed with the
l05mm howitzer. Apart from the new armament, the first 800 vehicles completed were
eimilar in every reapect to the basic M4. In the British army this vehicLe was designated
Sherman Mk lB, the B indicating the howitzer armament. Armoured regiments in infantry
divisions usually had a proportion of these close aupport vehicles.
From September 1944, production Shermans in thia eeries were fitted with the new horizontal
volute sPring suspension and wide tracks with centre guidee. In this form, as ahown in the
drawi.ng, i.t became the M4E8. Other retrospective modiJications to the original design were
aleoincorporatedinthisproductionseries. Alsoshowninthedrawing, thegeincludethefitting
of a 47 degree armour plate on the glacis, a commanderrs cupola, and a gunner's hatch. A
total of 841 Shermans were compLeted in this form by the cessation of hostilities. A number of
these were supplied to the British army, where they designated Mk.lBY, the Y in this case
indicating the modified suspension. As far as is known, none of these were used operationally
by the British, but a single example of this comparatively amall Sherman production variant
stands on the playing field of the R,A. C. Depot, Bovington, Dorset.
The M4A3(Sherman lV) was also produced in close support form and will be covered in a
future drawing The pilot model of this close support serieg was known as the M4E5.
The vehicle drawn carries an auxiliary fuel tank.
