Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world of work. With machines becoming smarter, many
jobs are also becoming more advanced. Some roles are disappearing, but new and exciting ones are
taking their place, as companies look for people who can work with AI or help build AI-powered systems.
One of the most popular roles today is AI engineer. These professionals design systems that allow
machines to "think" and make decisions. For example, an AI engineer might create a program that helps a
car drive itself or a chatbot that answers customer questions. To do this, they use complex programming
techniques and lots of data. Many AI engineers have strong math and coding skills, especially in languages
like Python. The salary is also very attractive, often starting at over $100,000 per year.
Not all AI jobs are purely technical. The AI product manager is a job that combines business and
technology. This person not only builds AI tools to solve real problems, but they must also work very closely
with engineers and designers afterwards to ensure effectiveness. Then, they must gather and look into
feedback from users. AI product managers must understand both what AI can do and what users really
need.
Another fast-growing role is the robotics engineer, who designs and builds robots that can perform
useful tasks in the real world. For example, a robotics engineer might work on machines that help in
hospitals, factories, or even space missions. Some of these robots can understand their environment and
act without full human control. Robotics engineers need to possess comprehensive knowledge in
mechanics, electronics, and computer science.

keyboard and be seen receiving phone calls. [II] However, the things she type are rarely work-related, and
when she steps out to answer phone calls, there is usually no one on the other end. [III] It’s all just a

While pretending to be busy at work, or “task masking”, is not a completely new concept, it
has recently been on the rise, especially among Gen Z workers. It has even become quite a large trend
on social media. Type the term on TikTok, and you will be greeted with numerous videos on various tricks
to look busy in the office, from walking fast with a laptop on your hands, to opening multiple random tabs
and files on the screen. The most popular ones can reach millions of views, with users commenting on how
they have applied the tricks for months without anyone noticing.
According to career experts, the major contributor to the increase in task-masking is not laziness,
but the pressure to demonstrate productivity. “I always have the feeling that if I just sit there, I will be
judged by my boss,” shares Ha Chi, whose fear is not baseless: in recent years, more and more companies
have downsized their staff by 25-75% in response to economic challenges. It can also come as a surprise
to many employers that many employees who finish their work quickly also engage in task-masking
behaviours. In the absence of engaging tasks, they might perform meaningless activities to fill empty time
at the office instead of going home, especially when companies are sending a message that presence
equals productivity.
The first step to address task-masking is to foster a culture where employees should be evaulated
based on clear work outcomes rather than time spent in office. Furthermore, managers must assign tasks
that are engaging and aligned with their employees’ skills and striking a balance between giving them too
few tasks and overloading them with work that can lead to burnout. Finally, it is advisable to implement
reward systems that recognize genuine productivity and allow flexibility, such as permitting employees to
leave early upon completing their goals.
