I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students must be able to:
A. add and subtract simple fractions with mixed numbers with and without regrouping;
B. enumerate the steps in adding and subtracting fractions with mixed fractions.; and
C. solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of mixed fractions.

III. PROCEDURE

A. Motivation
The teacher will show pizza pie and will ask the following questions:
1. Is this product found in the community?
2. Can making this food product be an additional source of income?
3. Is pizza pie eaten in halves? Fourths? Or whole?

B. Presentation
1. Present the following problem about adding and subtracting
mixed fractions
2. Show the steps on how to add and subtract mixed fractions
without regrouping.
3. Present another problem with regrouping
4. Demonstrate the steps on how to add and subtract mixed
fractions without regrouping.
5. Give examples and call volunteers to solve it on the board
C. Generalization:

To add fractions,
• Make sure that the fractions are similar fractions before adding.
• If the fractions are dissimilar fractions, change it to similar fractions by FINDING the Least
Common Denominator or LCD. Finally, solve the given problem.

D. Application
Analyze and answer the word problem below. Use a separate sheet of paper for your solutions.

1. Dwayne invited his classmates to their house after winning a math challenge. He plans to
celebrate his success with his friends, who helped him review his lessons before the math

competition. Dwayne wanted his celebration to be special, so he plans to decorate their house.
His mom told him that in order to do so, he needed to buy 4 3 10 meter of white cloth, 2 2 10
meter of blue cloth, and 1 4/10 meter of red cloth for the backdrop. Dwayne got confused by the
numbers. How many meters of cloth should he buy in all?
2. Mr. Liam brought a roll of wire 12 7/8 meters long. He used 5 5/8 m to make a pen for his
ducks and 5 3/8 m for a pen for his roosters. How many meters of wire were left?

Find the value of each of the following

Direction: Answer the following on 1 whole sheet of pad paper. 1 point each for
identifying if it is with or without regrouping and 2 points each with the complete
solution and correct answer.
1. Loius and Nial walked to their grandfather’s house to visit him. It took them 2 4 of an
hour to get there when riding a tricycle and 3 7 hour to get back home walking. How
much time did they spend going both ways?
2. Vinci had 12 1 2 bars of soap. He used 4 3/6 bars of soap for the white clothes and 6 2
8 bars of the colored clothes. How many bars of soap did he use altogether?
3. Jeromy worked for 2 3 4 hours planting “palay” in the field and 1 1 2 hours cleaning
the car. How many hours did he work in all?
4. A football player advances 2 3 of a yard. A second player in the same team advances 3
4 of a yard. How much more yard did the second player advance?
5. Jackson caught shrimp that weighted 7 2 3 pounds. If she gave 5 1 6 pounds to his
friends, how much shrimp did she have left?
