Fluid Statics

1. A solid cylinder of 360 mm long and 80 mm diameter has its base 10 mm thick of specific gravity
7 The remaining part of cylinder is of specific gravity 0 5 Determine, if the cylinder can float
vertically in water.

2. A differential manometer is connected at the two points A and B as shown in figure. The pi pe A
contains a liquid of specific gravity 1.0 while pipe B contains a liquid of specific gravi ty 0.9. The
pressure at A and B are 9.81x104 N/m2 and 17.66x104 N/m2 respectively. Find the difference in
mercury level.

3. A rectangular plane surface of 1 m wide and 3 m deep lies in water in such a way that its plane
makes an angle of 300 with the free surface of water. Determine the total pressure. Also de termine
of center of pressure, if plane rotate to vertical with its top edge becomes 3 m deep from water
surface.

4. A pressure gauge at an elevation of 18 feet on the side of an industrial tank containing a liquid reads
11.4 psi. Another gauge at an elevation of 12 feet reads 13.7 psi. Compute the specific weight,
density and specific gravity of the liquid.

5. Find the volume of the water displaced and position of center of buoyancy for a wooden block of
width 2.5 m and of depth 1.5 m, when it floats horizontally in water. The density of wooden block i s
650 kg/m3 and its length 6.0 m.
