TASK QUESTION
This assignment is divided into two (2) tasks:

Task 1: Application of First Order Differential Equation

Instruction / Step / Procedure:
Pick ONE topic of your interest (must be approved by your mathematics lecturer):
i. Growth, OR
ii. Decay, OR
iii. Newton’s Law of Cooling.

The details for each of the options are as follows.

i. Growth, OR,
ii. Decay

Step 1: You are required to have a set of secondary data, for example;
Population data, can be retrieved from:
https://www.worldometers.info/population/, OR
https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.POP.TOTL, OR
https://newss.statistics.gov.my/newss-
portalx/ep/epProductFreeDownloadSearch.seam
You can be more creative to search for the source of data, for example,
population data for one particular state in Malaysia, or any other countries
in the world. Minimum number of years: 10.
Step 2: Using the data set that has been obtained in Step 1, you need to find the
particular solution of the differential equation for growth (or decay), based
on the model on page 187 (MAT097) or page 246 (MAT099).

Step 3: 1. Plot the graph using the data set in Step 1, and
2. Draw the graph of the particular solution in Step 2.
There should be two graphs, one graph to be plotted from the data set and one graph
is the graph from the particular solution (Padowan, Desmos, etc.)

Step 4: Use your particular solution in Step 2 to predict one future value.
Show the working steps to find this predicted value.

Step 5: Use your particular solution in Step 2 to find one value in the past.
Show the working steps to find this past value.
Step 6: Use the following questions as a guide for you to do the analysis and
discussion:

Semester January – June 2024 MAT097 & MAT099

1. Are the values calculated from the particular solution accurate with the
actual values from the data set?
2. Find the percentage of error (if any).
3. If there is any difference between the actual value and the value calculated
from the particular solution, why do you think it is so?
4. What has affected the population growth in the past?
5. What do you think might affect the population in future?

iii. Newton’s Law of Cooling

Step 1: You are required to have a set of experimental data.

Sample experiment

Equipment Quantity Purpose

Cup 1 Hot water container
Hot water 200 ml Experimental fluid
Temperature 1 To measure the
probe temperature
Stop watch 1 For time
measurement

Procedure:
I. A cup of hot water at a certain degree of temperature was taken in a
cup.
II. Put the temperature probe in the water and allow the water to cool
down.
III. Measure the temperature and list the data in an observation table.
Minimum number of observations: 10.
IV. Record your experiment session and attach the photos (in the report)
and video (in the presentation).

Step 2: By using the data set that has been obtained in Step 1, you need to find
the particular solution of the differential equation for cooling based on the
model on page 190 (MAT097) or page 249 (MAT099).

Step 3: 1. Plot the graph using the data set in Step 1, and
2. Draw the graph of the particular solution in Step 2.

There should be two graphs, from the data set and from the particular
solutions (Padowan, Desmos, etc.)

Step 4: Use your particular solutions in Step 2 to predict one lower temperature.
Show the working steps to find this predicted value.

Step 5: Use your particular solution in Step 2 to find one higher temperature.
Show the working steps to find this past value.

Step 6: Use the following questions as a guide for you to do the analysis and
discussion:

1. Are the values calculated from the particular solution accurate with the
actual values from the data set?
2. Find the percentage of error (if any).
3. If there is any difference between the actual value and the value calculated
from the particular solution, why do you think it is so?
4. What do you think has affected the cooling for your experiment?
5. What do you think might affect cooling in general?

Task 2: Numerical Methods

Instruction / Step / Procedure:
1. Answer the question given by your lecturer for each individual group.
2. Draw the graph for the problem that you are solving. (Use graphing apps /
software).
3. Submit the softcopy of Excel file for your Task 2 to your lecturer.
4. Ask your lecturer’s preference, whether in the report, you have to also show the
steps of your calculation using Excel worksheet.
