ENG 102 - ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY 2

Course Description:
This 3-unit course is aimed in enhancing the reading and writing skills of the learners in an
academic level. Furthermore, it is an application of the linguistic, stylistic and communicative
competences of the students as they engage in their production of spoken and written outputs that
are creative, functional, communicative and relevant to their academic undertakings and future
professional works locally and globally.
Number of Lecture Hours: 54 Hours
Course Outline
1. Linguistic Competence
1.1. Grammar Accuracy focused on correct use of Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs
and their Markers (determiners, connectors, prepositions, modals, auxiliaries,
interrogators, intensifiers and qualifiers)

1.2. Vocabulary Control focused on language levels or registers especially idioms,


colloquialisms, and connotative levels of meaning.

1.3. Orthographic Control focused on standard spelling as well as text types and
hypertexts
2. Communication Strategies
2.1.Identifying Clues and Inferring Meaning from Spoken and Written Texts

2.2.Taking the Floor (Turn-Taking)

2.3.Asking Clarification

2.4.Monitoring and Repairing Communication Gaps

3. Working with Texts


3.1. Taking Minutes during Lectures/Seminars, Meetings and Defenses
3.2. Content Analysis of written, audio and video materials
