WHAT IS
TRANSPORT
ENGINEERING?
Definition and scope of the field: Transportation engineering falls under civil
engineering and encompasses the organization, creation, management, and
maintenance of transportation systems to construct intelligent, secure, and
livable communities.
WHAT IS
TRANSPORT
ENGINEERING?
Relationship to other engineering disciplines: Transportation engineering, a
dynamic field within civil engineering, is not an isolated discipline. It is closely
intertwined with other engineering disciplines such as urban planning, traffic
engineering, and environmental engineering.

CHARACTERISTICS
OF TRANSPORTATION
MODES
Speed
Capacity
Cost
Safety
Environmental impact
LAND
TRANSPORTATION
Speed: Moderate, ideal for short to medium distances.
Capacity: Limited in comparison to trains and ships, yet
appropriate for smaller goods.
Cost: Long distance travel is typically more expensive due
to fuel and manpower.
Safety: Accidents and road conditions pose a medium
level of safety risk.
Environmental Impact: Fuel usage causes more carbon
emissions than rail or water transport.
AIR TRANSPORTATION
Speed: The fastest way of transportation, particularly for
urgent or fragile goods.
Capacity: Limited when compared to ships and railroads,
making it best suited for high-value or lightweight goods.
Cost: The cost per ton is extremely expensive due to fuel
and operating expenses.
Safety: High safety requirements; while accidents are
uncommon, they can be devastating.
Environmental Impact: The most carbon emissions per ton-
mile, making it the least environmentally friendly.
WATER TRANSPORTATION
Speed: Slow, especially across long distances, yet can
transport commodities globally.
Capacity: Extremely high capacity, ideal for handling big
quantities of commodities and bulk materials.
Cost: Low cost per ton-mile, particularly for international
shipping.
Safety: Generally safe, although subject to weather
conditions and potential hijacking in some areas.
Environmental Impact: Although ship emissions are low per
ton-mile, they still contribute significantly to global pollution
levels.
PIPELINE
TRANSPORTATION
Speed: Constant, not quick, continuous flow.
Capacity: Large capacity, particularly for oil, gas, and other
fluids.
Cost: A large initial investment, but minimal operational
costs once created.
Safety: Quite safe, although leaks or ruptures can have
severe consequences.
Environmental Impact: Lower emissions during operation, but
the possibility of major environmental damage if a spill or
leak happens.

FACTORS AFFECTING
MODE CHOICE
such as comfort, convenience, and journey duration can all have a
substantial impact on mode choice. For example, some people may prefer
User Preferences driving their own automobile for the privacy and freedom it provides,
whilst others may pick public transportation for its cost-effectiveness.

such as gasoline prices, car maintenance expenses, and income levels

influence mode selection. In periods of high fuel prices, people may
Economic Conditions switch from driving to public transportation or carpooling. During
economic booms, people may be more likely to buy new cars.

such as public transit subsidies, road tolls, and environmental rules, can
encourage individuals to use other modes of transportation. For example,
Government Policies measures that support cycling or walking through improved infrastructure
can boost these modes of transportation over driving.
